Cemetery gates...

On this one song it's not the opening riff, but the riff on the chorus of Pantera's Cemetery Gates (from the Cowboys from Hell album) is awesome... simple, heavy, melodic and very effective use of artificial harmonics. IMO what makes most really cool riffs work well is the vocal melody on top of them... Children of the Grave by Sabbath is a simple riff but with the vocals on top, it sounds killer. The riff that always makes me want to pick up my guitar and play is the one in Helloween's "you always walk alone" from the keeper part II album.

Jeff Berlin's entire tune "Joe Frazier" from Bruford, "Gradually Going Tornado" ((C)(P)1980, EG Records Ltd., EGCD44 if anyone cares). Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin, Dave Stewart, John Clark. Get it, if you've never heard of it...

Fuck.

Done as one take, too, as I recall. So who says bassists can't write killer fusion music? I saw Berlin live with Tiger Okoshi at Jazz at Michaels in Boston in 1979 (hell, it was only two blocks from my apartment on Hemenway St!) and thought I'd freakin' died...

The rest of the album's not too bad either, if you want to stretch out your bass chops. Trust me. Just don't listen to the vocals...

Oh, and in a more pop vein, the guitar hook from the Vapors tune "I'm Turning Japanese" circa 1981 or so. I don't think I've ever heard a hook set so *hard* from a (basically) nothing tune... Eat your heart out, Buggles!

Crazy Train?????????? Funny, back when I was giggin, we covered that tune in one of the bands I was in and now if I tried to play it, it would be like I was tryin to play the guitar upside down and backwards! I just listened to it again a few days ago and thought to myself...........how the hell did I do that? Gotta be one of the top 5 at least!
