hey all

I'm starting this thread to help the poor misfortunate souls (like myself) who can't afford a new processor.
I'm looking for you late 80's-early 90's processor users, Please no die-hard amp only peaple on this one.
What was/is your favorite?
Why?
What type of music did/do you use it for?

My favorite: The Digitech 21 Legend. I say was, but, I still use one.
My reasons: You can get a very warm sound out of it. Includes foot pedal. Versatile. Works great as a preamp or for direct line recording. Looks cool. Not too hard to set up (but with any processor, the perfect patch can take months of tweaking). Sells for less than $200.00, now, w/foot pedal.
Purpose: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Thrash, Grunge, etc... Clean and distortion sounds under those catagories.
I'd also like to say how disappointed I am with the Digitech RP 12. It sounds extremely thin and tinny. Nearly impossible to set up. I was expecting it to be an improvement on they're older processors, its not.

What was yours?
Rich

I've got 2 Digitech processors: the 2101 which I bought new in 1994 for $750 and the Valve FX which I got used for $150 which included the Control One,which is part of why I got it,it was too good a deal to ignore.Anyway I like them both a lot(even though I also like amps!)I think you would, too, because they can do a lot of similar sounds to the Legend, but then they can do tube sounds as well, which is neat. The 2101 works well as a recording preamp for both guitar and bass(if you EQ it right),I even used it once to record my voice through it to get a different sound. The one thing these 2 units have in common is they both have either 1 or 2 12AX7 tubes in there,BUT unlike the newer Digitech stuff, they use a regular power cord which IMO gives the circuit more juice to work with so they sound better.Cheers!

You say "did"--I still do use my Korg A2 signal processor. It has a host of amazing guitar sounds in it. If I have time one of these days I'll post a few samples to prove that there was life before the Pod...Its main flaw--1/2 second gaps between patch changes. Some of its features: killer distortion, reverbs and delays, phenomenal choruses, phasers and flanges, a credible if not outstanding wah and an even better rotary speaker emulator (Univibe kind of sound), a crappy Exciter, good EQs (fully parametric, three band)...lotsa stuff. It's still the jewel in my recording toolbox (in conjunction with my Twin).

I've got a DOD G7 that I still use on occasion. It is very simple- 30 factory presets and 30 user presets. It is very easy to edit and has decent distortions and effects but no speaker simulation. You pretty much have to use it in front of an amp. This is the second one I have had. The first one I sold and was sorry I did. I found a discontinued one for sale and grabbed it for $75.00 .
Rock On!!!!

Life before POD... I like it, wish I could change the title of this thread to that. The 2101's a bit pricey. It would be hard to get anyone away from a new pod long enough to show them what the used big boy can do. Valve FX, Korg, DOD, that's what I'm Talking about, Keep it going.

Rich

p.s. I hear the Pods got a delay when changing patches too. I think most processors do unless they store several patches in memory, the one good thing about the RP 12, it stores 5 patch banks in memory, to bad you can't use em.

My old guitarist used a Rocktron Voodoo Valve. It Was and Still is my favorite...
Best guitar effects I've ever heard.

Well, It had tons of Factory Presets, that acyually sounded like they were upposedto.
Remember all the Preamp/effect units that wee supposed to be so&so's settings? (I remember Digitech was pushing this in their ad Campaign for awhile)

Well-Want Van Halen? pull up the preset called Eruption! Sounded EXACTLY like Vanhalen's sound on the first Release.
Want Randy Rhodes? There was one that sounded just like Randy Rhodes amp-and man, it was kind of freaky! It was just an amazing and versatile unit.
All of the effects were great sounding, and it had a 4 band fully parametric EQ that was AWESOME!
My Guitarist used this Preamp, a Carvin Tube 100-watt Rackmount Power Amp, and two of those Mesa NBoogie cabinets-where it's an Angeled Cabinet that's cut in half (2x12"'s in each box) loaded with EV speakers,
and A 20th Anniversary White Les Paul Custom.
This rig ROCKED man!

We lined him into the board through a pair of Redboxes live-but for just recording, he'd plug straight into the mixer and we'd all use headphones.
