What's your favorite nearfield in the 1k-1.5k range for rec, mixing & mastering?

What's your fav? I gave up on the Event 20/20, Mackie 824 and Reveal I use to use and went with Dyn BM6A. I feel they are great monitors but lack in the lows when I push them hard. Everything else is just fine.

I was thinking about the ASP8 and thought I'd overcome the low end problem but I haven't heard them side by side.

If you had about $1000-1500 to spend what would you choose for all in one monitors sub free?

I've been using the HR824s for a little over 6 years now and I love 'em. :)

I wouldn't... I'd save more and buy a pair of ADAMs....

I've settled on finding a pair of used genelecs. when monitors become my weakest link.

I wouldn't even consider nearfields if you're planning on mastering on them also...

With a statement like that, possibly you'd like to comment on what you would use? :D

In that range? Probably B&W 604's with a decent amp.

Nothing. I would not want to mix and master on the same monitors. Chances are you will have zero translation.

I would mix on a pair of Event Precision 8s in that price range and send the mix to Massive Mastering to finalize. :D

I suppose I need to send you a Christmas card now too... :D

Saving up for ADAms would be a fine idea. However, you will have to save up twice your budget before you see a real improvement over the Dynaudio's. Personally, in that budget range I would go with passive BM15's and a new hafler amp, or save up another $200 or so and get a used Bryston amp. The Events aren't going to give you any better low end, just different low end. With the Event's however I feel like you would be making a sacrifice in the high frequency range, and the imaging department (width and depth). The newer ASP events though are certainly head and shoulders above the older ones, I must give them that. I would also avoid Genelc unless you are ready to double your budget again, and personally I don't like the Mackie's. I actually do like the old Tannoy concentric monitors though. Those can be had used for a very reasonable price. Then there is Truth audio and Quested. More nice stuff. Maybe used PMC's if you are lucky. Man, there are just too many choices:(

Those are some good monitors you mentioned. I considered the BM15P with a Hafler (Mac MidI Music) now they offer the Steward Amp, Hafler is suppose to be out of business...all for $1699, right at the top end of my budget.

The ASP8 does seem like a gamble to be becasue many folks seem divided in their oopinion on the BM6A vs the ASP8. It may not be worth selling the BM6 for the ASP8.

Then as far as Truth Audio, I considered them also BUT they are not acceptng orders at ths time and no one seems to know when they will.

Why not get a Dynaudio BX30? It will give you the bottom end that you need plus more. Not clear on why you want to be sub free, if placed correctly they are a great addition and may help you to build up a 5.1 system later by adding more BM6As.

No BX30 for me, I don't like subs and my budget is no more than $1700 - and that's after I sell the BM6A's. This is why originally I was thinking in terms of the ASP8. Also, no 5.1 for me in this lifetime.

you probably won't get something with accurate low end for that much bread...i have the 6's...i know what yer saying i'm always on the hunt as well.

i'd think the 15's with the amp would probably do ya better...especially if you dig the dynaudio 'thing.' (boy is the midrange hard to get on those for me. no clue why.)

the usual what about yer room treatment ? applies here too.

dunno about subs,

Mike

The BM15P concerns me too, I've heard of people having the same trouble with the mids.T hey take care of the low end but introduce another set of issues. I go back and forth with the ASP8.

My room is treated with real traps.

SOMEONE SAVE ME FROM EITHER ETERNAL DAMNATION  OR GUIDE ME TO EVERLASTING BLISS :) .

I AM ABOUT TO PULL THE TRIGGER ON THE BM-15P AND HAFLER P4000 AMP.

SHOULD I OR SHOULDN'T I???

THANKS!

I have had no problem with my BM15's. I still want to add the sub though:D The BX30 is no longer in production and has now been replaced with the BM12,10 and 9 (just for everyones info). The Hafler P4000 is also a very solid amp. Personally, I say go for it. I don't think you will find a better overall monitoring system for less money unless you find a good used deal.

I think I can deal with the BM15 and Hafler 4000, a buddy of mine is trying to convince me to go for the ASP-8 and use the mony saved on something else.

I'd love to hear from someone that heard the AS8P and BM15 side by side.
