Musician's Friend is selling the MXL 990 Cardioid Condenser with a shock mount and carrying case marked down from $200 to $70.

Has anyone used one? Is there anything wrong with it? I just need a semi-good quality vocal mic to record on my BOSS BR-1180 with.

What are you using now? If your answer is " something from radio shack" get it!
(Boss has phantom, right?)

its a pretty decent mic but in that range or slightly more you have other options:

Marshall MXLv67

SP B1

If you have a TLM103, your basically getting a shockmount for it with a mic thrown in. :)

I read an article in Recording...last month was it? Where one of the writers loves the 990 on guitar amps...

You can definitely do better if you're looking primarily for a vocal mic.

Edit: Oh...and that whole marked down from 200 means nothing... was never worth that much...

MF calls it a large diaphram condenser, but it lists the capsule size as 20mm, which would be small diaphram. i've heard its more like the 603 but in a different enclosure.

I have two and like them quite a bit. I use them for vocals that need that hyped high end to cut through and also very often as room mics or the pair in a x/y for quick recordings of practices.

I was really impressed with the live recording and tend to favor them over the Oktava mk012 for that purpose.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward buying it. For a mic, shockmount and carrying case, you can't go wrong for $60, right?

Also, for $99 I'm looking at the Behringer B-1, but on musicgearreview some dude said he had both and said that all-around the MXL out-performs.

Is there a consensus for that, or would any of you recommend the B1 instead?

I believe the Studio Projects B1 is the mic you are looking for,
it's under $100.00.

for vocals, its hard to know what mic will sound best for you....the MXLv67, MXL 990, and the SP B1 are all decent mics for the price.....if you could audition them first that would be your best bet.......
