Everybody knows (well, at least they should) that Mackie has this new Onyx mic pre/mixer line. So what's with this new term "boutique quality preamps"? What happened to the "Class A Discrete" pre? Is this some euphemism (I had to look that word up) for a lesser quality amp, like, "I live next door to a Sanitary Landfill." instead of, "I live next door to a dump!" or, "I drive a Cadillac SUV." instead of, "I drive a Cadillac pick-up truck!" If someone can shed some light on the difference between the two terms I'd greatly appreciate it. That would save me a trip to the Sanitary Landfill after I purchase one of these Onyx pres and find out that they suck!

Mackie says about the boutique ONYX pres that they changed the ICs from the VLZ PRO design for better IC's. All this means to me is that they switched the TLO81 or TLO84 opamps to some Burr-Browns 2134 or other boutique opamp.

Basically, I would expect some difference between those and the VLZ PRO design, but I wouldn't expect a revolution either. Anyways, I'm pretty sure they are excellent pres.
