I just bought a pair of MXL 993s. In the case came 2 993s, 2 mic clips, some paper work (telling me how smart I am to have made this purchase) and this round thing that looks like it should be a replacement end for one of the mics. Can anyone tell me what this is and how it is to be used? Thanks

i got the same thing i dont know what it is either im guessing a replacement part

is it a mic capsule? If so maybe you have a uni and an omni that are switchable.

I also bought the 992/993 combo and it has one of these in there too. It looks sort of like an areator (don't know if I spelled that correct) from a faucet. Could it be for singing in the shower? and if so, how do they know I sing in the shower?...lol... I've checked the all the paper work and there is no mention of it. It seems to have a different grill design, perhaps for shedding water?..lol..:)

Does it look something like this, but probably in a different color?

Look at the top of the MXL 993 in the following photo:

I'd imagine that what you have looks similar to the top portion of each mic, down to where the first ring is around the mic. Does the extra you have have a circle drawn on it? If so, it is anomni-directional replacement diaphragm for what is screwed onto the microphone currently (likely a cardioid diaphragm). Not sure why you only got one though, if you in fact bought a pair of the mics.

Yes, that's what it looks like and yes there is only one in the case. In fact there is one hole in the foam so only one would fit. I bought the 992/993 combo from MF and then thought I could use a second 993 and use the recorderman style for drum OH. I looked at MF and you could buy a single 993 at 149.99 or a stereo pair at 149.99. Now I don't claim to be real smart, but the pair seemed like a no brainer.

why do they throw in just one omni capsule with a stereo pair???

is it to make you buy the other one?

or is there some unknown miking technique involving one cardoid and one omni????

So if I want to use the recorderman style on drums, do I use the cardiod or the omni?:confused:

Cardioid on both mics.

Faderbug: There is such a technique. It's called the "I don't know what the hell polar patterns are so I'm going to throw the omni capsule on one to make it look like I know what I'm doing." People use it all the time. :p
