I am currently using a creative EMU 1212M
With a Behringer ADA8000 hooked up to it
in Vegas 4.0
Using ASIO
to record 7 tracks of drums simultaneously.

Sometimes... (every 45 second or so)
I get either tiny pauses or skips in the audio.

its even worse on playback.
I have to listen to things 3 or 4 times so that I can tell if the tracks are messed up or if it is just playing it back incorrectly.

what gives?

I'm running a P4 2.4 Ghz with 512MB DDR & Windows XP Pro.

I wanna figure out if it is the 1212m, the ada8000, the software or the computer that is bringin me down... any thoughts?

Man, I am bummed to hear you are still having problems, especially since I'm a Sonic Foundry booster. I think the problem boils down to this - ASIO and Vegas don't get along yet. When I upgraded to Vegas 5 - and mind you I was leaping all the way from Vegas Pro 1b - I used the ASIO drivers on my first new recording, which was band practice. Skips galore, and at random intervals. And of course I didn't find out until after rehearsal. But I know that you can only get 2 inputs with the WDM drivers. This really sucks and I wish I had a solution that didn't involve spending more money.

Perhaps it is time to give up on Sonic Foundry... :(

All I have used for the past 4 years is Vegas, Acid, and Sound Forge...
I would hate to give it up...

but if there is another program I can use with ASIO and my gear, then it's probably time to switch.

Is there such software?

another thing...

I don't know if this is Vegas' fault or not,
but If I wasnt to hear anything at all... I have to reset the sound drivers after every time I record.

finished

ok, I finished tracking the drums....

and to compensate for the skips/pops, I did a few hours of editing the wavs. Man was that a lot of work.

But now I can move all my tracks over to Vegas 3 (so I can use plugins)
and finish the album by recording guitars/vocals one track at a time.

taylor. i'm a computer engr. dont know if this will help.
but ive seen a lot(A BOATLOAD !!) of computer systems in my life.
heres some typical reasons ive seen for pops/clicks/skips etc etc.
1. dma not being enabled on pc hard drives.
2. network cards in pci slots taking possession of the pci bus,
and interrupting the audio card. same goes for fancy pci video gaming cards
and tv tuner cards.
please tell me what cards you have in your pci slots. NOTE...
ideally you want the emu as the only card to occupy a pci slot.
thus giving free rein to the pci bus. i would get a pc tech to check your system and see if its possible to do this if you can.
peace.

Did you guys try raising the buffers in the ASIO control panel supplied with you soundcard?

ASIO isnt getting along with vegas in many cases. If you would rather switch to another app so that you can use an ASIO soundcard, you might be dismayed by some of the other " features "

pci

in my pci slots I have the following:

EMU 1212m - 2 slots. Thats my sound card.

Video capture card. - 1 slot. Hardly ever in use.

USB 2.0 / Firewire card = 1 slot. Not in use while recording.

I think thats it. are any of those guys troublemakers?

re trouble. could be. a lot of pci cards can cause skips in audio because they lock out the sound card.
just run a test. by disabling in control panel each pci card. and evaluating results. and see if the skips end.

I had a lot of click/dropout problems with my new PC build.

I was trying to get my new PC to work with ST Audio DSP2000 and CubaseVST 5.1, but other software clicked too.

After 6 weeks of hair tearing and upgrading I found that a clean OS install solved the problem.
Some installed application was causing the trouble.
Main suspects NAV or MS Office.
I haven't had time to narrow it down to the precise culprit.
I was suspecting driver problems, slow RAM (started with 2x256 pc3200 cl3 went to 2x512 pc3200 cls STILL clicked)
I bought bigger, faster HDDs.

The new HDDs gave me the luxury of a clean 98SE install with only music apps installed.
No more clicks.
I still wanted to use the one PC for general use as well so I went for a dual boot solution.
I've now got XP installed as a second OS and I run my music apps in that.
