What's the new Myspace?

I'm not much of a social networks kinda guy anymore. If I want to be social, I'll call/text/mail. So forgive me if I seem like some clueless old man. (FYI I'm 20. :p)

Anyway. It seems MySpace is more of an undead than a living network. It seems only independent musicians still desperately try to use it out of some sense of tradition, while most of the audience has kind of gotten bored with it. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

So (assuming I'm not wrong in how I see it now) what's the 'new' network where young souls can be won and defiled with flaming new licks?

Yeah MySp is kinda dead.
I still have my stuff there cuz I got kids I wanna keep an eye on.

:D

But there's Reverb Nation...OurStage and another I forget. :o

:drunk:

Myspace should be dead, but it's got a lot of inertia, unfortunately. Enough people use it that it's still kind of the default for people who just want a quick, free website for their band or venue.

FaceBook is starting to take some of that market (especially where venues are concerned). Which in some ways is worse. At least MS will let you browse a band's profile without logging in. Everybody and their grandmother uses it though, so having a FB band page is a good idea.

And there's about a bajillion other sites trying to be the next MySpace: Reverbnation, Soundclick, Last.fm, PureVolume, etc. etc.

Ironically, they're probably all better-designed than MySpace. They just don't have the user base.

MySpace's latest GUI is absolute garbage. I cringe whenever I log in to see what's up....

I think MySpace is dead but doesn't have sense enough to be buried. For the last few months I've had strange things happening that no one on the site will address such as, not being able to change members names, you can change it in the profile change area but when you go to the profile nothing changes no matter what, next went the ability to change song order, now most features are on the blink like reading email, writing blogs, and friend requests. If you can't connect with people what's the reason to have it?? I also have seen a lot of people going to Facebook but I've had a LOT of trouble setting up a band page their. Musicians need to invent a network like MS & FB that people can go to for networking. I realise Soundclick is good but the personal networking has some to be desired.

Facebook buried Myspace, sorry if I offended anyone but it is true, the owner of Facebook is now a billionaire.

Which, to some extent, makes Facebook the new MySpace. It's a social networking site that every band feels like they have to have a page on to remain relevant and competitive, but is unlikely to actually get your band more exposure or help you book gigs or make money.

Youtube is the flip side of the coin in that a small group of musicians have been noticed by the right people or have marketed their YT well enough to achieve some level of success.

Hmm, mspce certainly hasn't done itself any favours with the new version - I can't navigate my own page let alone do stuff. Pity, I preferred it to fbuk until the changes came.

Yep - MySpace hired the WORST designers.....you think they would have maybe asked me before they changed it. Or asked a monkey. I'm sure a monkey would know their layout sucks...

Hey.... Bandcamp.com is no bullshit music only environment.

None of this comment here, likes this, wall post this, picture that.

You can create a really shape looking page. put your stuff up on there for free or purchase or honor system whatever.

It's search capability is a bit wonky in my opinion but i think thats the panache of it all. If your in there browsing for new stuff your not limited to just typing in your friend band name. You actually have to browse by genre, geographic location.... browse by 'tags' to be more specific.

And also reverbnation.

I am going to put my stuff up on both and see where it goes i guess.....

Bandcamp and ReverbNation are good. There are a few decent music players of Facebook now, so that should make it easier to post music. I have stuff posted on myspace too, but the music player crashes my browser, so tend to I avoid it.

Soundcloud is an amazing tool for hosting, sharing, and embedding your music on your websites. It allows you to upload full quality wavs and even has a sweet iphone app out. Definitely my favourite new discovery on the internet. As for a "profile" site it doesnt offer much, but most of the bands around here are hopping the bandcamp.com wagon.

I think it ironic when someone starts a thread and never comes back.

This one in particular is very ironic because ole SlowerHand started a topic on social networks, then vanished.

But here WE are, socializing.

It’s like a group of people on the playground where 4 weeks ago someone yells “Dead Rat” and a group forms around and discusses the dead rat while the yeller is off to yell something else.

Face palm with a head shake.

I suspect ole SlowerHand is really a social engineer.

That's what I have on my resume, but that's mostly because it's easier than getting REAL education, experience, and references! :D

Edit:
Oh wait... you said social engineer not "social media guru." Those two are actually pretty different.

Which, to some extent, makes Facebook the new MySpace.

This reminds me of the Walmart episode of South Park lol, but I will say that you can and I have gotten a lot of recent opportunities & great collabs from FB....it all depends I guess.
