They're so amazing. You can get a great kick-snare feel off them and finger-tap the top of the frame for fills.

There are various models out there even some with snares that can be turned on and off.
I know a few semi famous artist that are developing the own lines.

I love the sound of this box, I try to play it several times, but doesn't sound good on me

Saw a guy on DU Uncut the other night playing a snare w' one brush, a Cajon with the other brush and a tamborine with a kick pedal accompanying an acoustic guitarist. sounded excellent.

They're used extensively in Carribean acoustic music. I've seen it used in Jamaica with an acoustic guitar. it had a sort of Calypso-Reggae fusion vibe.-Richie

I made one and have played some gigs at the hotels here in a duo playing cajon. For awhile I was into it and even recorded some with it.

This is not in the flow of the feeling of the thread, but my true feeling was, and is at this time (knowing the history of the slaves that brought cajons here because they weren't allowed musical instruments, sorry to offend):

1. they don't really sound very good
2. it's a stupid concept based on the visual "wow, that guy's playing a box!"
3. thank God (I don't believe in god but I'll say that from time to time :)) we live in a society where we are allowed to have bonified musical instruments and don't have to play a stupid box.
4. get a GigPig, those make sense, cajons sound like a dumb box
5. it's a stupid fad - it's a box, get over it, it doesn't sound as good as the worst drum Musician's Friend ever sold.

Have to disagree with pretty much everything you said.

I respect that and imagine the vast majority of people here will agree with you.

Like I said, I'm not trying to offend, just share my opinion based on gigging with one and getting into cajons for a few years. I, in the end, rejected the concept. I do like these though, and they are direct descendants of a cajon (the videos at the bottom are good):

I should add, and I know lots of people will hate this, that I pretty much don't like any music without drum set in it, maybe that's why I don't like cajons and like GigPigs. Even GigPigs are kinda hokey, but I think it would be neat to have one in the corner of your living room and be able to pull it over and play without setting up a kit. It's on wheels so you could wheel it into a club and sit in.

I'm heading that way myself, which is a bit odd given that I'm a passionate guitarist and a reluctant drummer. But I think even a little percussive rhythm can go along way to turning an ad hoc jam into something cool.

For sure. I have a cajon and if you were here and that's all I had, I'd play it and I'd like to think that we could have a good jam.

The thing is though... a cajon is just a box. The one I made, I think, and so do a bunch of pros who have heard it, sounds better than the ones in the stores. That being said, it's just a plywood box and after 1 tune I've had it with it. The magic of a cajon is just this: if you took any good drummer and had him tap your dining room table I'll bet with a decent mic you could get some pretty cool tracks. The magic is in the player, and if there's magic in a cajon it's to see how much music a creative person can make on a poor instrument. I can relate to that... for about 1 tune.

And I know people will think I'm Joe Negative about this. I was a cajon fanatic for awhile, but I came to another conclusion: why play a cajon when I have a nice set of Ludwigs?

Russ Kunkel I believe used a cardboard box and a kick pedal for at least one track on the 'Running on Empty' album by Jackson Brown. I always thought that was cool. I have used a shoe box on several occasions with brushes for adding percussion to acoustic tracks.

One time, to say we could, me and a friend set up on the street in Waikiki and he played guitar and I played a cardboard box with brushes. We got something like $35 in tips... was fun!

I don't know the dimensions, but Todd had one at canjam, and it's pretty big. The box is the same for all of them, but the inserts change based on whether you get it. Each one is in a different location but there is a wooden box near the top left corner of the map right under a tree.

Not all cajons are a box

Check out this video of Pepe Espinosa playing cajons made to be in the range of Conga, Tumba and Quinto:
