Whats the difference between Niose gate and Noise reduction?

I use the noise reduction process in Adobe Audition because reaper doesn`t have it. However it has a noise gate where you can just lower the threshhold and you can`t hear it but you can still see the fuzz in the wave pattern where noise reduction removes it. Which one should I use ? Does it matter ? and if so why?

A noise gate will "gate" out the signal at a set treshold, which is usually the point where signal drops low enough for the noise to be audible.

Noise reduction is processing that uses compression/expansion and bias to code/encode a signal and remove noise in the porcess.

Noise reduction tools apply techniques to remove certain frequencies from your audio regardless of volume.

A gate, as miro says, will remove sound that is below a set threshold.

So, for example if you have a hiss running through a voice over, a noise gate is no use since it'll only really work in the gaps, whereas some NR plugs might be able to reduce or remove it during the speech.

You can still see the fuzz in the waveform because you're using a real time effect.
This means it doesn't alter your waveform; It effects it live as you play it back.

yes it does. It's called ReaFir. Sample the noise you want to remove and use the "subtract" method.

I tried that and it didnt do anything....I highlighted an area in the waveform where there was nothing playing, opened reaFir looped it and reaFir captured the profile but it didnt do anything...I have seen reaFir do the same noise reduction process with a plug called wavosuar but I dont have it...Maybe I missed a step?

Wavosaur is not a plug. It's a standalone editor. Is this the link you saw before?

How to use remove noise with Wavosaur

ReaFir works well for me. Have you tried asking for help on the cockos forum or here in the "Dont Fear the Reaper" forum? I have found some links that may help to shed some light on getting the plug to do what you want. You should really try to get to know ReaFir, if you haven't already. It's probably one of the most useful and useable plugins one could have.

hey thanks for ur time...people seem to like reafir... i dont think i know how to really use it yet, i guess but the question is ....why does it seem like it does half the job? I notice the same thing with parametric EQ.... no way to set the Q .... im still kinda new but I thought this was like the most important tool for mixing...thanks for the links i havn`t clicked on one yet ...goin there now

i dont know about reafir but in audacity you have to as you say highlight a portion where no musics playing profile it then highlight the whole wave form and process it after you have profiled it . so i'm not surprised it sounded like its not doing anything, i think you missed the vital step out. dont shoot me if im wrong just trying to help.
