That's a nice older unit that should be fine & functional...

in the studio. Fostex products are generally not my favorite, but this particular one I like. Fostex support, on the other hand, is not great.

I've heard their 1/2" tape machines are decent. Stay away from the 1/4" machines is also what I've heard. Cheap parts and cheap contruction. No direct experience.

I had a Fostex 4-track years ago that was a routing nightmare.
You wouldn't think a four track would be that difficult to operate.

I have 2 fostex D-80 hard disk recorders.....the customer support is shit. they dont even have the software updates on the site anymore, and the units are from around 96.....i sent multiple Emails to them, they didn't respond.

I can confirm Forstex's sucky customer support.

I was unfortunate to purchase one of their first digital 8-tracks, the FD-8. That's been gathering dust for a few years. I'd feel bad about ebaying something that works right 90% of the time. I suppose if you backed up every five minutes it would have been ok.

If it's free and says Fostex on it, take it. If not......

By the way calling is alot more effective than email, especially if you call them hourly for two weeks or so. lol.

This is an older unit, but I bought a Fostex XR-7 4 track like 6 years ago and I still love it, although I use a DAW now.

Regarding customer support, I have a good story to tell. Maybe 6 months after I bought it, my mixing/recording level meter went out. The warranty was up so I took it to our local pro audio repair shop. They repairman said those things are vacuum packed and sensitive to drops, but I told him I really had only used it maybe less than 25 hours at that time and it always sat on the same little table in my music room. I even made a cover for it to keep the dust out.

Well, he opened it up and looked over the outside and noted that everything was in mint condition and that it obviously didn't take a fall, so he called up Fostex and told them about it. They sent him the new meter reading gauge for free and paid for all but $20 of the repair cost for his labor. I was appreciative not only because he didn't have to do that (I didn't ask him), but they didn't need to respond like that since the warranty was up. They saved me about $150-$200.

This was years ago but I never forgot their kind response.
