AudioBuddy by M Audio is $80 for solid state 2 channel unit w/phantom power.It has tons of headroom and stays quiet even when cranked.Great "bang for the buck" pre.

I've had one for a couple of months now and I put it the the same category as Harvey's ECM8000s (I have a pair) for value.Similar dry,clean sound to Mackie VLZ pres.

I'll add my two cents: I think any of the new desk top tube pre's are pretty darn good for the cost. ART tube MP studio, DBX, Bellari, Blue Tube. THey are all about 100-115 bucks and sound pretty good. There is also a channel strip out by Berringer that Guitar Center sells for around 125 bucks that looks like a great deal, but I haven't tried it yet.
When I need portable I use the TUBE MP or Studio form ART. NOt spectacular but reasonable.

I was going to say Audio Buddy . . . untill I remembered the Joemeek VC3Q can be had for cheap if you look around.
It takes some getting used to, but the Meek will grow on you. If you can find it anywhere for less than $200, then my vote is also on the Meek.

Hey Trak, I haven't seen a Meek for 99 bucks around these parts. I was just at GC yesterday and the cheepest Meek was about 200.

I LOVE this thing, mic pre/compressor/EQ in one. I tried it on one of my female artists yesterday... WHOA!!! I put my ART tube MP Studio back in its box this morning. I won't be using that again for a WHILE.

yeah, a few weeks ago GC closed out the VCeQ for $99...if you can find that it would be awesome...if not the Audio Buddy is a nice clean lil pre or an Art Tube Mp if you want a pre that can get a little "Dirty"....

I vote for clean vs. colored when multi-tracking. If you do multiple overdubs, that "color" (read distortion) piles up. Cleanest you can get cheap is Audio Buddy, followed by Symetrix 202 (used) or Mackie 1202 Pro (XDR preamps) which gives you four pres for $400 new, $300 used. Happy recording!
