It's because most of these Chinese mics use a capsule similar in design to the Neumann 1" capsule. So the comparison to the best selling Neumann mic becomes inevitable.

Yo MicFlo, welcome to the board!

"im trying to get a studio, that will get me proffesional quality, good enough to be put on a cd, and be sold, without the quality being jacked"

My man, you are in trouble already. There is a road ahead of you that goes on a ways. I'm doing what you describe, and it's taken 2 years and $20,000 worth of gear, many hours on line, and many hours staring at a microphone and a clip indicator.

All that aside, I think many would advise you that several less expensive mics can be a better place to start than one $300 mic.
A basic mic kit starts with one or more cheap dynamics (SM57), then a large diaphragm condenser, a pair of small diaphragm condensers, and a kick drum mic. Later, the large diaphragm condenser becomes a dedicated pair, one for instruments, and one for vox. Then you add a tube mic, then a ribbon. What is my point? What you need mics for right now is not to record a CD, but to learn. More mics of different types will begin to familiarize you with the different options.
Under $400, I'd buy an SM57, 2 Marshall MXL603's, and a Studio Projects B-3. I believe there isn't a mic on that list you wouldn't find useful if you had a $5000 mic. Best of luck.-Richie

Can't people be creative enough to come up with another mic to say their cheap Chinese knockoff is just as good as? Why is it always the U87? Why not: "My Behringer B1 sounds just like a Brauner VM1 KHE for a fraction of the price!" or maybe "The Superlux CM-H8A is every bit as good as the Manley Reference Gold for thousands less!" Doesn't that sound much more interesting?

I think the point was to compare the mic to one that most people know about, so that the level of sound quality is easily understood. My goal wasn't to post something "interesting" but to post something straight forward. Perhaps if I wanted to show off and compare the mic to something a little less commonplace, I would've chosen a more obscure microphone.

k, thx...appreciate i see shures..listed the most

so ill look in..shureksm27

Would buying 1 603 and recording stereo at with my B1 work out. I know they're cheao but I;m pooooooooooooooor. Thanks

Definitely search ebay... ksm32s (better than 27s IMHO) go for around $300 all the time. Sm7s are good too (I'd assume they'd be good for rap).

i can tell you right now seeing that i've been producing hiphop for years the ksm27 greatest for hiphop/r&b vocals..i've had better results with no name and se electronic mics...
the ksm32 excells it by far the the ksm44 is nice too...
with out a doubt i'd look into Studio projetcs..
Audio technica too..the 4040 is a very clean overall mic.. its not only good with vocals.
the hole studio projects line is a good line of mic.. from the B1 to the new stereo mic..

I'm a nut for the Rode mics.

1st choice- Rode NTK if you can find one cheaper than $500 new, it will be on of the best investments you can make.

2nd choice- Rode NT1 Surprise! $150-$200 with a sound worth ten times that. Extremely quiet.

Also the older AKG C3000 (black NOT silver) were extremely versatile, with bass roll-off and switchable pattern. About $300 new. You'll have to find one used though.

I would not for the life of me go out and buy an NT1 or one of those AKG's. You're talking $200 for an NT-1 when you can have a used Sennheiser MD-441 (twice the microphone) for $240 or so? Thats crazy to me.

"whats the best mic in a $300 dollar price range?"

Best for who? Best for what? What does "best" mean to you?

The Audio Technica 4033a is a well reputed large diaphragm mic. The Studio Projects mic is the new kid on the block that seems to have a great reputation for a relatively low cash investment.

Actually, I think you're both wrong. The AT 4033 is a well respected electret condenser that's not a large diaphragm mic. It's a well respected midsize diaphragm mic that gets one hell of a lot of play particularly in Nashville pro studios. It's a Bluegrass standard.-Richie

So, mattamatta, you like to bump things, huh?

I like old threads. Unlike a lot of old things they don't smell.

Anyhow, I vote for the AT4040. It's versatile without ever really sucking on anything.
