:D I figured since the mic forum is closed down, someone has to pick up the slack! :D

heh - how about less than 10 bucks....
a panasonic wma capsule wired up. oops - add a buck for a 9v battery.
under 200 bucks would have to say any cheap beyer or ev you can get hold of.

Chessrock, I am assuming you're new to the boards so let me help you.

What you want is a computer microphone modified by Jim Williams. The capsule is painstakingly replaced by one that is ever so slightly "better" (better not being a subjective word here) and the 1/32" cable is fattened up to 1/16" and uses Mogami or Monster non oxidized carbon free oxygenated gold wiring with just a hint of copper for added realism. The imaging is considered superb by anyone who says this.

Then, the on / off switch is replaced by an exact duplicate.

Extended to the fully upright position the mic can be considered downright stunning by some who would consider such things. In the vertical "chattin' on the internet" position the mic really shines when used for that purpose in said position or when not in use. Jimi Hendrix's "Ecclectic Nady Land" was recorded with a microphone completely unlike this yet shockingly different through no preamp at all to ADAT blackface.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email someone. I'm glad to have helped.

Best mic under 200? Try under 120

For vocals? SM58 never fails - around 110 dollars new
For micing instruments such as Toms\Cymbols\ and Snare as well as Guitar and Bass cabs, the SM57 is phenominal for the price; used all over the world this is really what it says it is, a legendary microphone. Goes for around 90 dollars new. I use a few of them in my recording studio. Shure is used all over America in professional studios, live recordings, concerts, etc. It's really not a shitty mic, don't let the great price fool you.

As phenolalinol as the 57 is, I would probably hit a cymbal with it before I recorded a cymbal with it.

Will you please tell me what "phenolalinol" means? And lets see you back up what you say about the 57 with a mic thats better for the price.

hello
maybe he means Phenylalanine, I have to take that stuff

but what's a cymbol

My band we used on our first record just the built in mike on the recorder

It helped us sound edgy, but now we got a contract with a local indie underground label and we are looking for mikes, reliable but still going to sound edgy and raw. is the 57 good for that? we are heardcore to the bone and dont want to sound too clear so we capture our live show sound.

First of all, this thread was a joke, posted by a long time forum member (3 years, 7300 posts) in response to the mic forum being closed for a few days.
Read warhead's reply. Pretty funny.
Second, while you are right about the 57, there are any number of condensers available for about the same money that would provide a better cymbal sound than a 57.

C3PO, or whatever, go to the mic forum and read the FAQ. This will tell you a lot. Also search the mic forum for sm-57.

Jim Williams? You know what kind of gear snob you're talkin' to here, don't you? It's either Royer or Sankin for this cat, buddy. :D

honestly, the best mic for under $200 is the shure slim "x" model 777. this mic was made in the 50'/60's and is really a true unsung gem. what was unique about it is quite extraordinary. a frequency responce of 2.7-33.9 khz. a self noise of 2 , probably the only small diameter mic that is multi-pattern. the figure 8 on this puppy sounds like any neumann through the finest pre-amp no matter what your preamp is. i swear i can hear a gnat queef from 20 yards. it really improves sibbalence, and does not need phantom power. its sort of like a multi pattern tiny ev re-20. the scientists spent like 4 years working on it and due to it's initial cost of $5700 (that's 1960 money by the way) it was a total flop. these turn up on ebay occasionally for like $77 or so, and it's a real steal. the highs are crisp, clear and bright, very detailed with no harshness or brittleness. its like the high notes soar and evaporate into pure sonic bliss. the mids are totally even, almost like a measurement mic. no phony presence lift or mid hype. sooooooo smooth, like the small of a 14 year old girls back, sweet like her neck. the low end is what the rappers refer to as phat. like the hottest big butt at the throw down shaking in your face. warmmmmmmmmmmm like getting it on in a sleeping bag on a hot day. imagine the low end of a mini moog but with the clarity of the best german mic ever made, but as accurate as a cia memo on iraq WMD. foolproof. one solid fuckin' mic!

LMAO

Chessrock, you made my evening.

Regarding the best mic, you should check with the Siskel & Ebert of the mic forum, DJL and Alan. These two will be able to provide a diverse perspective on what is bad and good.
