whats everyones opinion on this and why do u think its the best??

Shure KSM44 is the best of the 3 major brands' three pattern mics...but street price is lower than the $1500 list.

for $1500 there is no one mic for all occasions, come to think of it, for any price there is no mic for all occasions. Maybe that's why they make so many kinds. Or is it the marketing....or is it the "man"

Yeah, that's kind of like asking "what's the best car for $30,000?" It really depends on what you want to do with it, and more importantly, what your tastes are.

Or a Neumann TLM49.

...well you would have to aim for versatility in an all arround mic...the most versitile are the multi-pattern mics...if you get a chance to listen to the C414...KSM44...or the AT4050...you should be able to choose amoung them.

I like the KSM44 the best out of the three...the C414 and the AT4050 are both great mics too.

At that price point he could get lucky with used U87 or a used Lawson L47MP. Of course, if you are shopping used, you could buy a C414, an AT4050 and the KSM44 all together for that money:D

A u87 is multipattern?...when piled on many different tracks will become a problem in itself.

The KSM32 is a cardiod only mic Ive seen on over 20 different tracks at once and didnt have that effect.

My U87 has a switch on it, and I believe all of them do, that selects omni, cardiod or figure 8 patterns.

That's a very useful mic - it's got a bass roll off that make it great for backup vocals, it really seems like several mics in one. Plus a 10 db pad.

I'd be lost without that thing recording, there isn't one thing I've ever recorded with it that didn't sound good, I think if something didn't sound good with it, it would be because the source sounded bad. I've used it with success on lead and backup vox (male and female), tenor sax, trumpet, kick drum, percussion and guitar amps and I'd say it's stellar (not just good) for any of those.

It's an older one, from the Record Plant in NY, still has the sticker, and was modified by Stephen Paul.

If I only had 1 mic, that would be it, 'cause it's like several mics. Recording vocals with two people, one on each side in figure 8 position is very nice sounding (where have I seen that before?).

Every singer I've ever had sing through that mic was real happy with it.

It would have to be modified...but like I said when you pile it on tracks that colored tone it has that is pleasing to the singer will mount up on you and give you problems when it comes down to mixing...so that makes it great for the vocals but Id only use it for a few tracks tops...not on everything.

nothing works on everything.................................

The KSM32 does seem to be good on just about everything...even vocals...but if the voice isnt that good it will point that out...the u87 is better on voices that arent as good since it adds more color...the KSM32 and KSM44 are both smoother...I might do a shootout on youtube to show the differences sometime.

Actually, the mic I'd pick as an all-around-use-it-on-pretty-much-everything-mic is the SM7. It's amazing how well that mic works for as cheap as it is.

Not counting overheads and acoustic instruments the SM7 is usable on just about everything.

i would go for the akg 414 xls and save the rest of the money for drinks...
great for vocals,guitars,percussions e.t.c
in my opinion, better and much warmer than the u87 which is very famous but cold and flat........sorry

Ive had the C414 and the KSM44 beat it...along with the KSM32...the C414 and the AT4050 are super choices for anybody...but the results with the shures were just better.

The u87 falls a little outside of the $1500 mark...but Ive heard a shootout with it and the KSM32 and with the singer they picked the KSM32 won hands down.
