I found a Shure PG58 for sale & I may buy it but I wanted some advice on it before hand. I herd it sounds like the SM58.

and I third it. PG58's are good for virtually nothing. Maybe to call out numbers in a bingo hall, but that's about it.

If my "like the SM58" you mean "bad", then yeah, it sounds like the SM58. Personally, I find both the SM58 and PG58 to sound rather muddy....

I'd say save your money and buy yourself a nice ribbon. :D

Well i definetly wouldn't use the 58 either one for recording. It's more designed for live stage use. You'd be better off going for the 57 which are only like $90 for pry the most verstile mic on the market.

PG = the Pro Gear range. Rather like the Squire range of Fender. Similar components, same look, essentially the same specs BUT NOT THE SAME.
Then again I don't like Shure mics either.

Maybe he wants it for stage use? Besides, what's the difference between a 57 and a 58 besides the windscreen? :p

I'm not sure how you get from PG58 territory to "Nice Ribbon" territory so easily. "Don't waste your time with that bicycle, buy yourself a nice helicopter." :p

For live sound use, the PG mics are not entirely useless, but you would be well served to save up for a regular 58. And yes, I've used both in live settings and I know the difference.

The windscreen has a significant effect on the sound. The 57 also has a more usable HF response, both in terms of having less deep frequency cuts and in terms of rolling off a little higher, I think.

Depends on the definition of nice. I've seen fairly nice ribbons used for $500-ish, which, price-wise, is more like the difference between an 8-year-old used car and a new one.

For that matter, even the cheapest ribbons coming out these days sound a million times better than a PG58, IMHO, and you're only talking about a factor of two price difference. Chump change in the grand scheme of things.

Of course, I'm assuming that this is intended for recording use, not stage use.
