I need advice. I've recorded several CDs at home on my Boss (Br 1180) recorder. So for, so good; but I want to take it to the next level and not sure what that is...Protools? others? My sound is acoustic and simple. Sort of 'country dave matthews'. Where do I go next to improve the quality of the recording without tech overdosing?

A couple things. First, do you want to improve your quality or just make it more convenient to record? Secondly, how good do your recording sound right now?

In my experience, when people want their stuff to sound better, rarely does buying more gear help with that. however, I think you would find it much easier to try new effects and techniques on a computer DAW than an all in one recording thingy.

I would suggest buying a simple interface and trying out Reaper for your software.

A cool interface that's a lot more than just an interface is the zoom H4n.
You can record right into it via the on board mic -XY- or your own two mics via two mic pres XLR or two line ins 1/4" or line/mic in via mini T/R/S input.
All this (four channels)plus on board prepossessing and FX, check it out on line.

Awsome songs! Especially #16- very 'Tool-ish'. Ok, can you break it down for me as to what I need as I transition out of the 'all-in-one thingy'? What computer, what programs? I have an SMP58 mic and my Boss recorder and that's about it. I'd like to keep things relatively simple, but I'm definitely ready to ramp up the quality of my work. Thx
