i finally purchased the dr-770 drum machine, so now i need something with midi sounds like horns, strings, etc. could someone please tell me what i should get? i don't have very much money to spend, and i will be using this for hiphop production. thanx a LOT!

Well, if it's of any help, I just got a jv1010 module that has some nice expressive sounds.

And you can download patches for it off the internet for free that someone spent many hours working on. Some of those patches sound unreal man. Really cool for hip hop

that sounds cool, but i won't be able to download anything for i am using a webtv. how much did u pay for your jv1010? also.. is the sp-202 any good? i know it's old.. but i can get it for really cheap.

thanx

D J Chronic - are you using your puter for recording? you could consider one of the virtual synths. then all you need is a cheap keyboard to supply the midi notes.

cheers
john

John - no, i own a webtv, not a computer. all i have as of right now is a drum machine. i'm very new to all of this. i have no recording equipment... yet.

OK - well a drum machine is going to give you drum loops etc but if you want strings, brass etc to play along with it in sync you are going to need a sequencer. A sequencer is a unit that records the notes you want to play - sortta like the old piano rolls that used to drive the old upright pianos. (first sequencer BTW)

You can get standalone sequencers, keyboards with sequencers in them or a computer with a sequencer programme running on it.

You are going to need a keyboard to play the notes you want the sequencer to play.

So you can either buy a keyboard with a sequencer in it, or a computer and cheap keyboard (without a sequencer) and a sequencing programe.

go search the site for questions and answers pertaining to these points.

Cheers
john
