When I try to record bass direct into a Mackie CR1604, the signal is stupid hot, like farty unusable hot. I tried going from the DI out on my head into an unbalanced line in channel and I'm getting a farty signal that registers at -4db with the trim pot completely off?

I tried plugging my bass directly into the mixer....same thing. I tried 3 different channels, same thing. I'm sure it's something obvious, or dumb. My bass is a passive G&L P. Sounds fine plugged into the amp.

oh....and I also switched cables and lowered the volume on the bass....same thing.

In order to plug a guitar direct into a mixer the channel input has to be able to accept a hi-z connection. I have a Mackie 1640 which channel 1 and 2 have hi-z switches for just that. Yours does not, so it will overload the preamp on the mixer. Second are you sure its a DI on the amp. Maybe your using a line out or send and that will overload the preamp also. If it is a DI on the head then it must be faulty. Best bet is to buy a seperate DI box and use it or mic the amp.
