Carbon111, I see you own both a K2600 and nord modular (impressive rack BTW, love the way you've set things up, makes perfect sense). My question to you is how would you compare the K2600 and the nord modular in terms of programming flexibility, modulation matrix, etc...

The K2600 and the Nord Modular are really apples and oranges - I love a lot of the programming flexibility of VAST but the K2600 is still entrenched firmly in the "sampler-with-a-filter-attached" camp. The Nord Mod on the other hand is a pretty good emulation of a well-speced modular synth with the added bonus that its polyphonic! I'm guessing your tastes probably lean towards harsher timbres but an excerpt of my song "Touch" might give you a feel for the sounds the Nord is capable of:

Everything except for a few background noises supplied by my MicrowaveXT is Nord Mod.
I used one of the built in step sequencers and a few drum modules for the drum sequence behind my song "Solstice on Mars":

Anyway, I know you know what VAST is capable of, but there's a taste of what the Nord can do. I hope that helps somewhat.
Now that they're about to release the next gen of Nords, the originals are going pretty cheaply...
Best Regards, James

James,

Thank you very much for the reply and the excellent examples. I just downloaded the Nord Modular manual (dunno why I hadn't thought of this before). I now understand what you mean by "Apples and Oranges". It is basically a model of this gigantic analog modular synth in the software. What a great idea! Looks pretty impressive too! I can totally see adding this to my wishlist... I can already see some uses that would either be easier to implement on the Nord or are impossible on the K... like filter frequency modulation at audio frequencies... told you I like weird :) It does seem quite shy in the effects department but no biggie, I can always route it through the K2600. In fact, seems the two would complement each other rather well.

Thanks again.

I'm currently doing all my recordings/programming on a Korg Trinity. Works like a charm, allthough it only has a 32 note polyfony.
I'm also harddiskrecording some of the Trinities Combinationprograms.
Also; I have tons of Akai sample CD's and a software sampler (Kontakt/N.i.)
Planning to expand a TAD soon, put gonna put the money into a more stable pc, cabling, soundcard, Fostex PM-1 studio monitors, condesator mic and similar gear.
Then; at a later stage; I'm gonna get another module.

I normally play on Mason Hamlin BB from the 20's. I like its tone and color. The action is made by Renner. It is pretty even and very sensitive. I recently purchased a Yamaha P120 Stage Piano for off-hour and travel playing. The graded hammer action feels okay. It will take a long time for them to make anything significantly better simply because the limit in weight and size of portable piano do not allow the real piano action or even its close match to be installed. I studied the actions quite a bit. Even the accliamed "wooden key action and straight hammer" by Kawai is not exactly the same and it indeed feels different for me.
