I am in the process of trying to create a relatively inexpensive home studio for hip-hop oriented music. Can you advise the essential equipment or computer software I would need to get started? Thanks.

essential are:

a sound module
a sampler
a software midi sequencer like logic

I would suggest an......

MPC (sampler/sequencer)

COMPUTER

SOUNDCARD

REFERENCE MONITORS

CONSUMER MONITORS

TRACKING PROGRAM

EDITING PROGRAM

Very good suggestion, Chriss. :)

Try this site for your beats. I dont use it, but I heard alot o people do. I think there's a free version and the full version is cheap.

I heard this program is an excellent and cheap way to record. But...never used it.

personally, I use this program to make beats. Its completely free:

and this to record:

Cool Edit Pro
www.syntrillium.com

And this to mix:

Acid Pro 3.0
www.sonicfoundry.com

you will need a good fast computer and a real soundcard.

An excellent card for recording rap vocals is the m-audio audiophile.

there is much more, but in my opinion, this should get you started. A final word to the wise: do tons of research before you spend a dime.
