What's an AD/DA Converter?

I've been trying to research what the function of an AD/DA converter is but can't seem to figure it out. If anyone can help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Simply analog to digital conversion.

Digital --> Analog

So it's converting your audio signal to something that your computer can work with........
and back again when you want to play it back.
Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog

so basically, if a mixer supports it, I can record through a mixer and get it to be individual tracks on my recording software? or would it just be one stereo track or something?

Depends on your mixer. Some can stream individual channels, others only stream the 2 channel main bus.

Also depends on your AD/DA converter.
It would need USB, Firewire or PCI card.
