What's a good book?

I got a Barnes & Nobel gift certificate from my father. What's a relatively new book (with lots of colorful diagrams!) that covers digital recording technique? Something thick and comprehensive so I don't have to ask a ton of rookie questions all the time, but advanced enough to cover mastering.
Maybe a couple books covering recording, mixing and mastering.
 
for the mixing part, The Art of Mixing by David Gibson is one of the best.....

Modern Recording Techniques - Huber & Runstein
Project Studios : A More Professional Approach - Philip Newell

I just caught Bruce (Blue Bear Studio)recommending these books in another thread..he knows a little bit about recording:rolleyes:

Couple months back, the Barnes & Nobel here in town had a ton of these books, but pulled them in November.

Ill agree there....but what woulda happened if Robert Johnson woulda read those books...we woulda missed out on a whole lotta blues.....

I think Robert did get ahold of that "Tantric Sex" book....all the ass he was getting shoulda made some happy blues......

Hey C7sus, I agree, "When Things Fall Apart" is an exceelent choice for any musician. Considering the ups and downs of the music business and what one must go through to be in it, this book contains invaluable information. I would further recommend meditation as a way of improving concentratin and thus listening skills. And so it goes...

BTW, I didn't think anyone here would mention such a book. It's nice to hear that someone else also believes its not just about mixers and mics and compressors and limiters and this gear and that gear. It is, ultimately, about people and musicians. This is getting to mushy, time to go.
