...I'm looking for a <$100 clip-on trumpet mic for live use and for recording. I don't need anything spectacular...we use SM57's on guitars, MXL-603's as drum overheads, SM58's for vocals, etc, so I'm just interested in a good sounding, durable mic for not a lotta bucks.

If you can find a used AKG D409 for that price it would be good.
I have used it on trumpet before with fantastic results.
Thy are about $175.00 new.

Clips on very solid to a horn. For drums (thier intended use) the clamps flat out suck.

I know people do it... but the thought of clipping a mic to my trumpet causes me to wince. :D

try the audio technicas... pro35 i think... maybe 37... anyhow they are real good for this... there is a problem with this idea though that you sjouild be aware of.... good players work the mic just like good vocalsists... taking advantage of proximity effect etc... with a clip on you cant do that... it's always in your face hot... so be warned....

Well I can see the working the mic aspect but, at the same time your putting out the same thing a un-mic'd player is with a clip-on.
Forget about ever using a mute though. Of course nothing say's you cant use a clip on both ways if you want. Just clip it to a mic stand when you want to.

Disclaimer: I am a terrible horn player just good enough to put some stabs here and there;)

strange.. i normally understand you... why doesn't that make sense to me???

:D I'm sure it's me. I was trying to quickly say that if a performer in a club has no stand mounted (or any mic at all) mic then he has no ability to move in and out from it. That would roughly be the same as the position you are in with a clip on mic. Sure the un-mic'd performer can point his horn to the ground etc. but, that's not nearly as effective as moving in and out on a mic.

I agree a stand mount would be best for recording with a great player but, a clip on could serve a person pretty well and may even be better for the average player.

ah... may not have been you though i couldnt wrap my brain around the clip on being like no mic... no mic hard to hear it... clip on hard to get away from it...
