Yeah. I had a couple of pretty good Ibanez 5 strings before I graduated to my Alembic. Both were less than $500.
 
Only one I got is a peavey ntb-5, like it alot but reviews from internet suggest you should try it before buying. But neckthroughbody and humbuckers.
 
I'll 2'nd The Bez comment.I like Fender and Spector as well...
 
I own a Spector Legend Classic 4-string...if the 5 string Legend is as good as the 4 string, then it would be a good buy. Mine has a good tone, stays in tune and plays nice....I bought mine used.

US Masters EP-5

Okay, so this is a LITTLE more than $500 (just over $700), but check out the US Masters "EP-5". It's the only guitar I ever bought sight unseen from Musicians Friend:

It's a very nice instrument - and as some reviews said, it plays like a bass that costs twice as much or more...
 
looks like it's a good chance i'll get a nice one for that price.

the Fender is ugly, the Cort is fugly, the Spector is a beauty - and I think that's the closest to one i played a Jamfest 05, sweet.

the ep is too weird looking w/ that little horn on the body, but the neck looks nice - I just got this GC 20% off letter good for June. Who knows if applies to anything since most things say 'sale' and it probably won't apply to sales....

I'll try anyway, i'm tired of the lowest end of the lowest end of axes, time to get something nice. I have a Laney pro-linebacker amp w compressor, eq and a 15", i think, so i can just plug it in, can't wait, gotta go THIS WEEK.
 
I got a Pevey Millenium 5 string for $400cdn around xmas time with a soft case. I'm not a pro bass player...sounds great for home recordings. They have a decent finish and all, no shit noise out of the pick ups. The one thing I don't like that much is the machine heads. They don't go out of tune badly but I find them weird when I tune though. Maybe I'm just use to my Sprezel on my other guitar.
 
I second (third?) the Peavey choice(s). I own a Peavey C4 (my main bass actually) and for the price, it is an extremely well build bass. Had to ground the thing properly myself, but the rest is amazing.

I don't like cord, the body of those basses always feels super-lightweight, and that's how they sound to me aswell.

I'm not a Spector man. Too klunky. Sound like they forced alot of lows in there with the super heavy body and neck to compensate for the lack of tone. IMHO ofcourse.

I like the fenders better, but they are as far from unique as it gets, which I really don't like.

I couldn't believe that G&L on ebay went for 330! Those are some good basses! Same goes for Ibanez and Yamaha, although I'd pick a G&L over an Ibanez or Yamaha any day.
 
i've owned a ibanez sound gear 5 string with active pickups and a peavey foundation with humbuckers, both of which i'd recommend on the cheap.
 
I have an Ibanez soundgear 5 string also. Cost me about £200. I have no complaints. Seems to sounds pretty good. That said I'm no bassist, I'm just a root note hugger.
 
that rondo is $149, looks nice from here, but anyone ever get one? seems impossible at that price.
 
And you thought the US Masters EP-5 looked bad? :)

it's so awesome, i feel unworthy, but that's good it'll make me play a lot more, and i got 20% off!! so it's not really a 'under $500,' but it was after the discount :)
