What You Were Meant to Be

I love this song!

I'd like to hear a bass that sounds a bit more ... well ... bassy. :D I'm listening on a pair of bass-heavy PC speakers and it still feels light around the bottom end. I want it to be slightly less 'exposed' and 'bare' in the second verse section, but I think it's probably deliberate, so that's not a recording point.

All in all - a definite keeper. Very cool indeed.

There are a few things that are more or less staples of the Little Purple Circles sound, or style, or theory, or theory of sound, or. . .right.

1. We like things pretty dry for the most part. (in terms of reverb)

2. We like drums to be pretty prominent in the mix. (We're not the only ones, listen to any Police record; the drums are the loudest in the mix, even over the vox.)

3. We like that trebley, tubey bass sound. I'll grant that we may not be doing it properly. It's pretty tricky. We'll get it right someday. There may be a way to keep that sound and have lots of deep lows in there as well.

4. We also love bass/drum communication. So bass(guitar) gets a little bias in our mixes for the most part.

5. And of course we love huge vocal parts and harmonies with lots of layering and occasional call/response bits.

6. Also, we see it as not 'guitar' based music. (mostly because neither of us are 'great' at the guitar!)

And there are exceptions to many of these 'rules' we use. (In Blue Sky, bass is the least important instrument, and guitar is) So these things are more or less deliberate in our recordings. We still need to improve and have much to learn yet. But you folks are helping with that.

Thanks.

....of course...XTC!!!
I couldn't put my finger on it, but having come from reading your influences - d'oh!! :o ..... I get that same feeling hearing your stuff.....a happily engaged brain and a busy booty....

True, with all the jokes about bumping going on it made me think of this...

My wife was chaperoning a girls high school age volleyball team at a tournament in Las Vegas. There's a warmup/practice thing that v.ball players do called "bumping", where you hit the ball gently back and forth to each other with your forearms. Two girls were practicing that as they walked down the hotel hallway w/my wife. A man walked by and one of the girls said to him innocently, "do you want to bump with us?" Nothing's funnier than real life, huh?

LOL!!! He probably went near to a coronary!! Yes, with all it's horrid-ness, life does have a way of giving us a few giggles.

Oh yeah....Bump :D

You guys are killing me over here!

I was laughing out loud at my computer screen. (yeah, I know LOL)

I don't think I've ever heard a girl say that to me before (girlfriends not counting). Did she have any idea how her question came off after she said it, I wonder?

Oh, I suppose I should thank True for the nice bumping! It felt really good! ;)

Incanus, it's even funnier if you have a real mental picture of the scene, because these volleyball players were tall, so looked older than they were (were 15, looked 19). I'm sure the guy must have thought they were double entendre-ing him, but who knows what was really in the girl's head. You know how girls that age are - sometimes they're thinking like innocent kids and sometimes not. Well, maybe more so not. :D

For sure. It is very difficult to know what the hell is going on in most girl's heads.
Language is ever fascinating to me. There are a great many words in the language that can have sexual double meanings, especially when delivered with that certain knowing wink or smile or whatnot. It definitely happens by mistake all the time. Hilarious!

For starters, here is a great one-liner easily taken the wrong way.......

Are you going to post a tune true-eurt? You've got my ear as soon as it's up.
Tim

What other wisdoms shall you impart upon us, oh great one with thy magic fingers to play

f*%# awesome man. very nice. I hope that some day I will be able to play and record tunes half as good as the ones you have been putting out.

Man, I just can't get enough of this tune. It takes a special mind to think of something this cool, let alone be able to transfer it from your brain to your hands. I'm in awe.

Hey Tim, you are not the only one who has the one liner. DOG has just been added, and there is more to come I am sure. :D

Hey True... you edited your previous post. You... err.... softened it's impact.

Now that one, I don't think I can manage with a straight face. Straight anything for that matter.
I will try to watch my wording a bit more. For now. ;)

Thanks RAMI.

The chorus to this song had been floating around without a home for three or four years... Sometimes they take a long time to come together. And a lot of duds get run up the flagpole in the meantime...

Thanks for the kind words Travis. It's just like anything else - keep at it and you'll develop a knack. It's only a little bit of creativity before the process kicks in... Develop a little "toolbox" of devices to use and then go to the one that works for the song. It's like laying tile or painting.
