For a pure riff?

When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) - man, Page had a way with alt. tunings...

So many other great ones have been mentioned already... I almost feel like the redundant tail end. However, there are some statements I'd like to address:

Cyrokk said Normally I would condemn a band like Godsmack.. But here I make an exception for the following reasons:

1. The band has openly stated that they started as an AIC cover band. They honestly revel in their admiration for AIC (compared to the hundreds of rip-offs that towed to the "Pearl Jam" line for radio play-including Pearl Jam themselves).

2. When you get down to it, the guitars don't sound like Jerry Cantrell.

3. AIC burnt itself out completely after Dirt (an album which I personally feel pales in comparison to both Facelift and Sap). .. Consequently, this same weenie-down approach to album follow-up was repeated by Stone Temple Pilots.. I am still pissed at these idiots for taking a promising genre to limp wristed stupidity.. (I think Soundgarden was the only group that left the scene with it's musical dignity intact) . I am very thankful that Sully and Co. understood and was there to pick up the pieces..

4. They may be AIC-ish, but at least they are talented players and songwriters

Let's take this blow by blow.

1) Just because someone revels in their appreciation for an average grunge band, doesn't excuse them from being an amazingly one-dimensional rehash of AIC songwriting sensibilities. Let's face it. Every song I ever heard by Godsmack had lyrics that could be boiled down to "My life sucks, I'm insane, fuck you" - this is a hopelessly one-dimensional version of the AIC lyrical method, which usually went more thematic from song to song, but the core concepts were usually "I'm strung out/insane" "fuck you" "My life sucks", or "You're strung out" - not exactly a "higher" level of writing, but at least more variety :D

2) The guitars don't sound like Jerry Cantrell because a) Cantrell played a standard six-string instead of those six-strings strung with the bottom 6 from a 7-string guitar, and b) Cantrell had some concept of chord progressions outside of the E-F-E-G in various keys that Godsmack so frequently overuses. (I expect their primary key would be B, not E)

3) Only arguments I have here is that
a) I thought Dirt was their peak - lots more variety in textures than the first disc, although it certainly had a few dogs on it (Hate to Feel? WTF was that?!)
b) Soundgarden, IMO, lost their dignity totally with that last album Down on the Upside - talk about a band's self-parody - Other than AIC's self-titled, I've never seen a band try so hard to sound like themselves...

4) They're definitely AIC-ish, but they've a long way to go before I would qualify them as talented anything - with the definitely possible exception of their drummer (who absolutely SAVED "Voodoo". I'm so bored with the "Godsmack" sound it's criminal. First time I ever heard them all I could think was "Hey look - it's AIC meets Korn!" - they've done nothing to improve my opinion since that first album. Maybe they'll grow up someday. Or maybe they'll end up like Pantera - another band that fell into the hopeless self-parody trap and haven't managed to find their way out...

Hopefully I've interjected enough tongue-in-cheek humour to turn this into a legitimate discussion instead of a firefight. :D

Anyone pick any rockabilly? How about Highway Patrol by Jr Brown. Or Berrys Jonny Be Goode.

riffs

Well i haven;t seen it but ...Walk this way ...come on people at least most recognized .....Tush ......an lets not forget ....Honky Tonk Women .......yeah there may be more complex or arty but hey ....it's a riff these are th first ones i thought of when i read th post ......my opinion ....later

It's cool, LesterPaul

Probably some of the coolest riffs aren't technical at all!
I mean, the intro of Kravitz' "Mamma Said"... doesn't that want to make you lean back (while standing), trying to play the airguitar Slash-style (=les paul around knees/crotch) and nod your head with a certain 'yeah baby, rock...' thing going on?

I mean, BALLS! the riff got balls!
Just like Money for Nothing, Tush, Back In Black, Eat The Rich, Satisfaction, etc...

THEY GOT BALLS!
Fuck Petrucci. Yeah, the dude can play guitar like a sweep-god, but can he 'groove'? Does his playing style has 'balls'? NO! I like to listen to Dream Theater, because they are gifted musicians, but if I want to ROCK, I'll put on an AC/DC or a KISS-album. Not "Images and words"...
YMMV, and I'm not passed 30, but I think I know what ROCK is about, and that lies closer to Deep Purple than to Dream Theater... Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr. Petrucci!
One of the few over-the-top fast players that still got 'balls' is Yngwie. Besides Eric Johnson ofcourse.

Bands with 'balls' (of the top of my head):
-Black Sabbath
-Deep Purple
-Kiss
-AC/DC
-Led Zeppelin
-Beatles (White Album)
-Aerosmith (some, not all)
-old Kravitz
-ZZ Top
-Rolling Stones
-The Kinks
-Dire Straits (some)
-Black Label Society!
-old Van Halen (now that's rock!)
-Uriah Heep

fill me in!
ROCK!

METALLICA

the master of puppets second intro riff... definately the best ever...

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
Queen - Tie your mother down
Lenny Kravitz - Rock and Roll is dead

Mi 2 cents

Rock and Roll Hoochie coo

I always thought Rick Derringer had a great riff going on there. I do nto know if I can call it the greatest as Alex Lifeson and Rik Emmitt give me much to think on and then there is Pat Methany, Al Dimeola, etc. My head tries to spin if I even try to think of just 1 best...
