What would you reckon as the best rock-riff ever?

A bunch of great ones for sure. How about:

Money-Pink Floyd
Sunshine of Your Love--Cream
Whippen' post--The Allman Bros.
Honky Tonk Woman--The Stones

For a rock riff I would have to go with"Teenage Idol"by Gary Moore.
And lots of Zappa's rock stuff.

Are you %$#*^$ Kidding

Someone asks what is the best guitar riff, an inane question to begin with, and the responses mostly contain multiple answers rendering each answer a non-sequitor. In summary, a competely silly question with illogical answers. Nice going. All you have proven is that the subjective areaof "music appreciation" is not a prize fight and there is no need for a "heavy weight champion of the world" in terms of music. Have a little sense of art and artistry and stop belittling the work of people that put that heart, sole and life into what they do. By reducing their music to such base terms you insult the creators and demonstrate your own lack of artistry at the same time. And besides, this is the HOME RECORDING site and this section is for information regarding guitars and the recording of them, this thread should be removed as not only a waste of space but an abuse of the stated purpose of this site. I think such items should be removed and discouraged.

Jack Hammer is absolutely correct.

Right. So it's "Whole Lotta Love" then?

Jack,

I don't mean to disagree that trying to pin down the BEST guitar riff is a matter of ones taste, however, I do not believe that this thread is worthless. I try to maintain a good reference collection and guitar material is at the top of the list. This way when someone says that they want their guitar to sound like Aerosmith's Love in an Elevator, I have a reference point.

I find it a useful resource to hear other peoples opinions of what a good guitar riff should sound like so I feel that threads like these do have their place. Granted not one a week, but once in a while. I know that from this thread alone, I have added at least two CDs that I need to pick up for my library.

Just my humble opinion...Rock on.

Hey WEBCYAN, have you ever heard of My Sisters Machine and do you know the relationship they have to Alice in Chains?

All these are great riffs posted here.

Peace,
Dennis

the only group i can think of that has a relationship to alice in chains is godsmack. they took everything from them, even the name.

Sorry, but you guys missed the some of the best ones...

...
Paperback Writer - The Beatles

Maybe look up some posts, where I said:
"Daytripper, yeah, that ones pretty cool.
But when the guitars start in "Paperback Writer", they rule too.

Anyway, Jack Hammer, I too disagree.
First of all, although it's a matter of taste, one can not dispute that certain names come up more than once (Zep &Zap :D , Van Halen, Beatles...) so, it seems quite uniform almost.

2nd of all, I'm merely interested in what's the musical bizz/interest here. This thread would probably be less 'lively', when HR was crammed with dance/r&b-folks, so I'm pleased to say there are still so many 70's rock (the era that spawned the best riffs...) lovers here.

3rd of all, there's a difference between criticism and trying to flame. I think you were 'trespassing' on the latter one....

Sonic Misfit makes a good point

considering your point of view, Mr. Misfit, yes, I see that. I can see how different riffs and thier respective levels of appreciion might benefit someone who is reccording guitars. I still object to the "best" or qualitative essence of the question. If the question had been, what is your favorite sounding guitar riff etc. that would be more in line with what you get fromk such a thread. And, for the record, I withdraw the usless tag I placed on the thread. No discussion about music is worthless to me since they all help to keep music alive and vital in our society and that, besides being of great importance to me personally, is truly an mportant thing and something this world sorely needs more of. If Sheik Rahman (or whatever the exact name is) was busy reading Home REcording and writing down his favorite guitar riffs, the World Trade Center would still be standing and many lives would have been spared. this may be an exaggeration but you get the drift. So, in keeping with the spirit, it should be clear that I agree, such discussions do have their place, and, better to discuss great guitar riffs than xenphobic, thoughtless, reasonless hate. Therefore, I'm with the guy that picked Chuck Berry doing Johny B. Good ( I don't think that is how its spelled in the original, but it might be) Anyway, this to me is the first and foremost rock and roll guitar riff that set the standard for an entire genre of music. So, lets pay due homage where homage is due.

Normally I would condemn a band like Godsmack.. But here I make an exception for the following reasons:

1. The band has openly stated that they started as an AIC cover band. They honestly revel in their admiration for AIC (compared to the hundreds of rip-offs that towed to the "Pearl Jam" line for radio play-including Pearl Jam themselves).

2. When you get down to it, the guitars don't sound like Jerry Cantrell.

3. AIC burnt itself out completely after Dirt (an album which I personally feel pales in comparison to both Facelift and Sap). .. Consequently, this same weenie-down approach to album follow-up was repeated by Stone Temple Pilots.. I am still pissed at these idiots for taking a promising genre to limp wristed stupidity.. (I think Soundgarden was the only group that left the scene with it's musical dignity intact) . I am very thankful that Sully and Co. understood and was there to pick up the pieces..

4. They may be AIC-ish, but at least they are talented players and songwriters..
