What would you have done differently

One of two things

I agree with the whole "never get involved" thing. Music is a fiendish mistress that will both give what nothing else can and take more than anything else would.

I love to write music. I would have just continued writing for my own pleasure, forgotten about the career thing (I found the price one has to pay for any success is more than I was willing to pay - foolish me thought it would be fun!)

If I still couldn't hold myself back, I would have stopped believing skill would take me where I wanted to go. You need skills, but more importantly, you need connections. Great musicians are all over. The famous get there because they knew the right people. Meet everyone and anyone - as a musician you are a sales person 24/7. (that was one price I found too high)

Maybe my experience isn't common. But for whatever it is worth........

one more addition

When I say you are a sales person 24/7, I am not forgetting that a good manager does a lot of selling for you too. Find a great one. They are as important as any other band member because the good ones (who care even a little about you) already know TONS of people. They will help you with in roads. But no matter what - no one will book you unless you bring a crowd. It is hard to find a built in crowd. So, the sales thing. Sell you music to everyone, and to do that, in my humble opinion, you are selling yourself.

P.S. - be careful if you try the "My image is no image" thing. It seems everyone needs an image so fans can relate to you. Seems more important than the music. Another fee that was too high. I suppose I was naively idealistic.

I would have done a lot more research come to here or gearslutz a lot sooner.

I would have never dreamed of listening to "ska".
