Hey I'm 16 and a noob. lets help out all the noobs in the world!

What would you have done differently if you could start all over again in your music recording career?

I would have started with acoustic treatment and solid monitoring chain before I did anything else. Would have saved me years of frustration.

+1 for room / monitoring.

Seriously.

If ya can't hear it right, ya can't mix it right.

+ more. A lot more.

I would've spent everything I wanted to spend on everything put together, invested in a good monitoring chain (including the room, of course) and spent the next several months learning to listen properly.

i would've joined this forum a hell of a lot sooner. what i've learned in 3 years here has been exponential. the previous 9 years of recording was more of an arithmetic progression. very simple arithmetic at that. as in, 0+1=1 in '97, 1+1=2 in '98 and so on.

Don't spend alot of money on amps. If you're going to record you can plug most everything straight into a mixer or recording software. If you're going to play live buy a decent PA before you spend a bunch of money on amps. And I think they should make drums with smaller shells so they aren't so loud.

Save your money and buy the highest quality stuff you can. You never have enough money to buy good stuff but you will always end up spending more money to relacment the crap.

It's a hard lesson to learn but don't settle on cheap shit.

That's my 2 cents ;)

I would have moved to the biggest city I could so that I would have started from the bottom there. You start at the bottom in a small town or city and work you way up, only to move to a bigger city to start at the bottom again as an unknown.

This goes for recording and musician.

Cheers

Alan.

If you're talking about keyboards and what not, I couldn't agree more. For electric guitars, I couldn't disagree more. Bass? I'm in the middle. I prefer and amp and a direct signal.

They're called RotoToms. They're plenty loud, too. If you want quieter drums, take the heads off.

I would take the word "frugal" out of my vocabulary.

I started out trying to be "budget friendly" and ended up rebuying everything two or three times over before I got anything resembling "decent" to my ears. Thus causing me to spend two or three times the amount had I bought decent crap to begin with.

+1 for mics on amps (including bass)

I would have surrounded myself with better people. There are alot of BSers out there.

Do you even know what a drum head is?

I would have devoted more time to becoming an archeaologist so as not to get intrested in this at all......

Unfortunately punk rock was for more fun at the time and i took the proverbial "turn for the worst"

That said, i would probably agree with the money savers and go with purchasing good gear and also probably go get educated at a college, casue it would be far more rewarding and enjoyable profession the one ended up doing....

Yea, Vague Post...

But the are alot of stellar posts in this thread i like it.

I would have stuck with it and not sold things when I needed the money. A lesson learned.

I would have bought one really amazing signal chain. A versatile mic, a great mic pre and a great compressor. I blew my money on lots of inexpensive pieces of gear, most of which I had to replace a few years later. The truth is that once you've finished tracking drums (if you are even going to be recording drums), you can do about 90% of the work with one great signal chain.

I'm still doing things that I will one day wish I did differently...
