Hello. Ive been recording drums for a few months now and get pretty good results. I was wondering how some of you would mic the 5 peice kit up with 1 sm57,1 electro voice n/d478 and two other pretty good dynamic mics that i am too lazy to go look at the name brands of. Oh yeah, please dont tell me to get different mics or anything else like that, just tell me what you would do with what i have. thanks,
Kevin.

mics

definately put the sm57 on the snare. if you can face it away from the hats but be careful, the drummer might hit it there. I dunno about the EV mic, but if it is dynamic put it in the bass drum about 4" away from the back head at an angle. the other mics can be placed on the toms as you see fit, but you can place them on stands a few feet back from the set on either side.. this will give you more of the stereo image you'll probably want. that's what i'd do in your case.

hmm, I think I would do that same thing with the bass and snare, but I don't think I'd close mic the toms. With the two mics, even though they're dynamic, I'd use them as overheads. It would totally help your project if you even rented a couple of condensors for overheads and then close miced the toms with the two dynamics, but with the 4 mics you have, I'd run snare, kick, and two overheads (the toms will sound distant, but it's a sound I dig a lot), cause you really will need the hats and ride to come through.

Mike
