Hypothetical question:
If you have a good condenser mic, and phantom power on your multi-track recorder, is there any reason to still go through a pre-amp any more? Or is the purpose of a pre-amp more than just giving your mic power???

Ok so that was 2 questions...sorry.

I know the answer might be along the lines of "depends on the quality of your mic and/or pre-amp". But let's assume they're both GOOD quality. Still need the pre-amp?

If your hard disc recorder has phantom power, then I'm guessing it also has a mic-pre on that channel; in which case, no you don't need an external pre. However, in most cases the pre's on those types of recorders aren't all that great; so an external pre may still be a good thing. It is most useful if you can use a line input on your recorder and bypass the built in pres.

Ahhhh....didn't think of that. You're right. I have the TASCAM 2488. I used to have the 788 (8 track) and the pre's weren't great. The pre's on this one are better, but maybe still not the greatest. The way I have it hooked up now, I'm doing just what you said: Pre-amp into a line in. Maybe my instincts were right. Thanx alot Alex.
