Here's my mic list:

2 - TLM 103's
2 - Shure SM81's
2 - Shure SM7's
4 - Shure SM57's
1 - Sennheiser MD441
1 - RCA 77DX
2 - Octava MC012's
2 - MXL 603's
1 - MXL V67 (edited to add)
2 - ECM 8000's
1 - SP T3
1 - B.L.U.E. Mouse
1 - CAD ST100 (Boundary mic)
1 - AKG C1000S (mostly used to hold the door open)

If you had these, what would you add to it?

I'm thinking of a pair of Neumann KM184's?
I'd really like to have another Neumann, like say... a U87 or U87ai, but does anyone know much about the U47fet?

Budget???
I dunno... say $2500 mas o menos

That's a very nice well rounded collection. I take it you have G.A.S. and just want something new. I've had a pair of KM-184s for about four months. I like them. They sometimes get a bad rap from purists who don't like the high end. I find the slight high end bump to be pretty pleasing for most applications. I've used them with good results on acoustic, overheads, and the horn of my Leslie. The Hammond has been their most impressive showing. These things really bring out the harmonics of a Hammond nicely.

You may also want to check out the Josephson C42s. They are supposed to be more neutral. I haven't had a chance to compare them to the KM-184s.

As far as the U-87 goes, by most accounts, it has a similar character to the TLM-103s that you already have. If I were you, with your collection, I'd look at getting a really kick ass LDC. I just insured that I'll have credit card debt for 8 more months when I ordered the complete Korby convertible set (U47, 67, C12 and 251 heads). It's on order so I haven't heard it. I can give you an update when it comes in. Unfortunately, the price has greatly increased since I ordered mine. In your price range, I'd think Soundelux or Lawson before the U-87. That's just my two cents. Good luck.

Ohhh vicarious spending!!Like Brad D said..The Josephson C42's from what I've heard would be nice for small D's
Im thinking about the Lawson myself as soon as my pre is finished being paid for..
Soundelux makes the "switchable" fet47/87..don't remember the model I belive its called the Ifet47 or something..
And just to be different maybe the Brauner Phantom C
Happy hunting

Don

Shit, what do you get a guy who already has everything? :D

A BLUE Bottle might be nice. Versatility is good. You've already got the mouse, the TLM103's and the T3, though, so you might be good in the LDC department.

Only thing it looks like you might be missing is one really super-gearsnobby high end set of SDCs, so yea, the km184's might just do the trick . . . but then I think I would be looking at a pair of Earthworks before I did that. The one time I've gotten to play with them, they just seemed like they were a cut above most of the others I've used -- really audiophilish.

I think these were the ones: http://www.mercenary.com/earsrpreccar.html

No question in my mind. At least one, and better, a pair of C414B-ULS. They rock on piano, which I know you care about. They are excellent on guitar, woodwinds, strings, harp, mandolin, and percussion. What's not to like?-Richie
P.S.- Check with Littledog on the mod B.L.U.E. did to his mouse- free of charge.

I'd probably suggest among these: A Royer R121 or R122, Sennheiser MD421, Blue Kiwi, Brauner Phantom C.

Fletcher once posted if he had to only have 16 mics then he'd get:

1) Brauner VM-1 KHE (best mic I've ever experienced)
2) Brauner VM-1 KHE (would like a pair)
3) Soundelux E-47 (close enough to an original U-47, but without the
worries)
4) Soundelux Elux-251 (close enough to an original ELAM, less expensive)
5) Soundelux iFET 7 (extremely versatile lg. diaphragm FET condenser)
6) Josephson Series 4 (awesome sm. diaphragm FET condenser)
7) Josephson Series 4 (would like a pair)
8) Royer SF-12 (great stereo ribbon mic)
6) Royer R-121 (great mono ribbon mic)
7) Royer R-122 (has a different texture than the 121)
9) Shure SM-7 (Great utility mic)
10) Shure SM-57 (Good utility mic)
11) Shure SM-57 (Good utility mic)
12) Shure SM-58 (Good utility mic)
13) Shure SM-58 (Good utility mic)
14) Sennheiser MD-421 (Good utility mic)
15) Sennheiser MD-421 (Good utility mic)
16) Sennheiser MD-421 (Good utility mic)

You've got a nice mic locker... humm, I love dynamic mic... so maybe add a EV RE20, a Beyer M201, M88 and a few Sennheiser MD421's. NOTE: I just got a Beyer M88, and so far it's awesome.

I think you've got some good mics. I'd look elsewhere to upgrade.
Seems I remember seeing pictures that you had these two little speakers pointing at each other in your "old" studio pics. (on 90degree angles to each other)
I'd think some speakers might be in line next... yeah..some nice $2500 speakers...

and...how about some NICE stands... you know..the big boy Atlas stands. ..the SBW32...or something along those numbers...whatever they are. I'd think essential for REALLY mic'ing your grand ...or just a good stand to have in general.

I think you had a PCM80...didn't you... if not.. I'd look for an upper end verb (you use outboard stuff, right?)

but...yeah...for $300...you NEED an RE20, without a doubt. ...or I'd upgrade the "lil condensors with some AKG451's....or your KM184's.. Forget the U87, unless you think it'll get you business. About all they're good for anyway...eh?;)

??
Wasn't me mixmkr. I've a pair of Event 20/20 BAS's and a pair of Tannoy Reveals. (And a pair of Alesis Monitor Ones in the closet) But I have been lusting after some ADAM's. ;)

As far as G.A.S. goes - Most of my time/money has been going into the new studio lately. Currently, all of the construction is being done by sub-contractors, so I have some time to play around. I'm also still on budget, and part of that budget was for new equipment. The idea being to come away with a really kick-ass vocal mic, maybe some new SD condensors, and a couple of new, world class mic pre's. ($2500 is not for all that, just for the mic) So, I'm shopping around some.

Some great suggestions here:
Royer
Josephson
Brauner
C414 B-ULS

The search continues......

There's some good mics on that list. I don't know exactly what you record but I noticed there's not too many mics I'd use for drums on your list. OK, some SM57s, but how about some MD421's for toms? Or Beta 56s? The SM81s you've got are great for hats or o/heads. The 603s too. Some nice tom mics would round out and compiment your collection nicely.

Dingo :)

Yeah, that's me. Is there a problem with that? The monitors don't sit at 90 deg. when I mix, and can be moved further away from the mix position when critical listening is required.

Those 20/20's will be soffit mounted in the new studio, and according to John Sayers, should sound "Glorious". So, I'm not obliged to making a whole lot of changes to the monitors at this time. I think to have a significant improvement in the monitoring environment, in the new studio, is beyond the means of my current budget, and would require a step up to something like ADAM's, Genelic, or a custom design by "Barefoot".

But thanks for the input, I do appreciate it.

Ah, geeze!
I didn't know Mercenary sold those.
Now I feel like a fool for asking Fletcher. :o

Thanks!

No... I don't have a problem with it... I'm not trying to be hostile or anything, so you can back down, if I take the tone of your words correctly. I just thought YOU might have a problem with it, but it appears THATS what works for you...and THAT is the only thing that really counts....right? I'm not trying to be brash, but I thought the speaker setup looked a tad unusual, and mentioned such, along with the fact that they seemed the weak point in your fine collection of equipment you are starting to get. The fact that you have to move them each time you mix seems a bit cumbersome also.

But...that's the OLD setup right??... all great, new plans for the future!!

I agree that the 20 20's will sound better wall/soffit mounted, as most speakers do. I DO see a trend with people wanting to "mount" smaller and smaller speakers nowadays it seems, and I personally kinda still put the 20 20's in a "nearfield" catagory, where as I'd want my soffit mounts to be more a mid field... unless of course the control room was a closet. Some JBL's maybe!!!?? Talk to Sjoko...

It's cool, and I thought it would better if I posted the link rather than Fletcher... that way no one can accuse him of spam. :)

FWIW, I buy from Mercenary Audio and I'm a very happy customer.

;) Maybe you did mis-interpret my tone. I asked is there a problem..., not do you have a problem...
so, anyway, I wasn't, ummm..... backing up? So no need to... back down.
I know its not an ideal monitoring environmet, but its not really an ideal recording environment either. This one will be much better:
http://johnlsayers.com/Studio/Mainpage/MP-Carriage.htm
And actually, I did look at the JBL's (the same one's sjoko has) and they're nice monitors. I got to hear one of my own mixes thru them at my local GC in their little... quiet room. They're definately better than what I have now, but they're not what I'd ultimately want to have. Again, for that, I'd move into the ADAM midfield line.

I understand your (not so eloquent and somewhat subliminal) suggestion that many people would be well advised to consider their monitoring/recording environment before their mic locker, but I think I have that covered for now. This is a microphone forum though, right, (and not a monitor forum) and that is what I asked about now isn't it. ;)

hey Michael,

a lot of people here in this forum have been wondering what these black crossed circles are in the studio plan, and what the dashed lines mean. Can you enlighten us? Thanxx!
