Thanks all who took the time to listen and post.
I really think this BBS is great!! Prior to coming across it, I'd been working in a vacuum, with only friends, neighbors and family to get feedback from. In general, they'd say "I really liked it", but not much else. You know, they didn't want to hurt your feelings no matter what they thought. As a result, I never got any good, constructive feedback. I've been on the board for a little over a month and have learned a ton. Plus, I've gotten to hear some really great music.

Wow !!! What do you really think? "Overly MIDI sounding" ...? ... ugh!! That hurt. But I can't argue with you. It's just one of those things that get's lost when you're so close to a song. You know ... can't see the forest for the trees ....
Gee, I kinda liked the horns ...... not anymore (LOL) ..... oh well.
And yes, that's a direct acoustic. And again, I can't disagree that the direct acoustic sounds cold. Side note - this entire song was recorded over three years ago. I decided to resurrect it for the board - but was too lazy to redo it. At that time, I didn't
think you could record a good sounding acoustic with a mic. This BBS has sobered me in that respect. My new philosophy is that I can't record a good sounding acoustic with a mic (LOL). My next tune is an acoustic picking song, I'm looking forward to the challenge.
Net-net .... appreciate your honesty.

Thanks dude. Yeah, people have mentioned the Beatles thing before. I think it might be the way I double tracked the vocal - somewhat Lennon-esque.
Twist
You give me too much credit. I had no idea what this song should sound like. The production just evolved over time - but, based on the feedback, me thinks this species needs to be extinct (LOL).
I totally agree in trying to the best with what you have. Unfortunately, I had to layoff my horn section. I like going after fuller arrangements (helps hide the crap .. LOL). I find them more interesting. Although, the board may be right that this song is poster child of the phrase "simplify, simplify, simplify".

Dynamics? I don't need no stinkin' dynamics !!! You're probably right. I just have this addiction to all things compressed (which is probably why I like Chris Harris' stuff so much). I did compress most of the tracks on this one.

Hey, hey, no piling on!!! Again with the MIDI name calling (LOL). And the bridge was "thin and wimpy" ... ? ... ouch!! I'm throwing away my BOSS distortion pedal (LOL).

Thanks. The Beatles thing was unintentional - probably subconcious - I've always liked their stuff a lot. I appreciate how they (er, no I mean, George Martin) came up with these unexpected arrangments and mixes.

If this song has any reedeeming tonal value, I can thank you for it. I used a lot of your tips in EQ-ing the tracks and final mix. Biggest help ..? ... taking out some of that harshness in the 800 Hz to 2000 Hz range (and cutting the low end). I've now done the same thing on "Mr. Stairs" and it really made the slide guitar much warmer (see Mix 4 on Nowhere).
Your right on about the cymbals. Mr. Stairs used some drum loops with my MIDI (sorry for the swearing !!) cymbals. This tune was entirely MIDI drums ... same cymbals. They're directly off my Turtlebeach sound card - as well as all the MIDI instruments on this song. Sounds like I'd better find a replacement patch.
Fuzztone: Here's an example of doing as best you can with what you have. Let's see, that was my Cortez Les-Paul copy going into an old BOSS distortion box, direct into the mixer. I've always hated having to mic stuff - much preferred to go direct. My experience on this board has forever changed that.
Thanks for the stars (your check is in the mail (LOL)). I've never really liked the "star-thing" on this BBS. I think it clouds people's opinions before they listen to it. Having said that, I cut them out and put 'em on my fridge (LOL).

Thanks for the songwriting comment.
In regards to the vocal, while I feel I can carry a tune, I find my voice a bit ordinary, so I'm always looking for an effect to make more interesting. As far the piano, oh, that was General MIDI patch 150, "Weird Keyboards" (LOL).
