What Vocal effect is this?

Hello everyone.

I just noticed the thread about what vocal FX are used on that Stacies Mom song in this forum. So it got me wondering about a vocal effect that has always puzzled me.

I can think of two songs off the top of my head that use this effect. First one is "Do you believe in life after love?" by cher. And the second one is "Follow me" by uncle cracker.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

The sound Sher gets in her song.

I'm not sure what effect it is.

It's either a vocoder, or auto-tune, depending on who you ask.

I read it was a vocoder.
