What type of RAM is best to use in a dedicated recording PC, SDRAM or DDRAM. What do YOU use. Help me out please. Also what CPU do you use and what is it like.
Im asking cos on my birthday i will have +- AU$1000, and have done some calculation and worked out i can build a complete system for this amount, heres what im proly goin to get, anything u would change?

AMD XP 2400 2.0GHZ CPU
Epox Socket A 133MHZ SDRAM M/Board
512 MB SDRAM
Seagate Barracuda 40GB 7200RPM HD
Mitsubishi 48x16x48 IDE CD ReWriter
17 Inch Digital Monitor
Nvidea GeForce 3 Graphics card

What do u think?

BTW, havent gotten 2 the stage of Sound Card choosing, so i know i need one and i knw its not in the list.

I have stuff but I am stilla newbie...

...so keep that in mind as you read this :D

When I went to the computer store and asked about SDRAM, they laughed at me.

So I bought DDR instead (apparently it is better)

I just built a machine with an athlon 1800 xp in it. It works just great. And I use this machine for EVERYTHING, and oddly weirdly enough, I have had not one single error!!!

So if your looking at DDR ram, Im not sure your mobo applies...it may or may not, I don't know. The mobo I went with was an (ASUS) A7N8X deluxe, the deluxe part meaning it is fairly loaded with..."stuff". It can hold a shitload of RAM, and eventually I will replace the processor with something a little more powerful. Im not exactly positive if the mobo I have supports the new Barton core, because I have seen the same mobo for sale on newegg.com, except two different versions. The one supports Barton the other says it supports up to XP 2800.

Well there is a rant eh?

As far as soundcards, I would strongly suggest that whatever computer you get, make sure it is fully compatible with whatever soundcard you get. Even if you dont get that card now, make sure that you know what you are going to get in the future, so it wont be a hassle went you do get one. Above all, I think that is the greatest source of conflict you will run into when considering your system.

BTW I have an m-audio delta 66 in my machine, runs tickety boo. those m-audio ones come highly reccomended around here.

Goooooood Luck!

SDR = Single Data Rate
DDR = Double Data Rate

I'd be a bit leery about an Epox motherboard. I'd recommend Asus, Abit, or Gigabyte, as I've built computers from all three. Though that's not to say other good motherboards don't exist.

Actually any RAM you buy will buy SDRAM (unless you are using RDRAM for some reason).

SDRAM = Synchrounous DRAM.

Whether it is DDR or not (and what speed DDR) will be up to your motherboard.

DDR = Double Data Rate.

So most likely you will be using either:

SDRAM
-OR-
DDR SDRAM

Yes, DDR SDRAM is faster.

Thanks guys, i think im gonna go with DDR now, i do remeber something about it bing faster but i wasnt sure. I will have a look at some better mobo. Thanks again, and i will post up an update of a new design soon.

Your AMD XP 2400 has an FSB (Front Side Buss) of 266MHz.
I would go for DDR PC266, it is a perfect match with your AMD.
So don't buy DDR PC200, it's too slow for your AMD. You could buy faster DDR like PC333 but untill you have a AMD XP 2600 or higher, FSB 333, you won't gain anny speed profit. Please notice, DDR doesn't fit in an SDR socket!!!

Hope that helps you
Henry
PS. there's also DDR PC400 but only Penium 4 uses that high FSB.
I would buy an AMD XP 2600 plus DDR 333, it's a little more money but much faster!!!!!

Agreed, I have an Epox with the kt 333, there is a memory transfer flaw
