Hi there,
I've just pulled my old home-studio equipment out of retirement in an attempt to get back to making music, but it's all looking a bit tired. I was wondering if I could get some advice on what to keep and what I should get shot of in favour for more current technology.
What I currently have:
PC with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
4G RAM
64-bit Op system (Windows 7)
Sound card is Creative SB X-Fi, with driver 6.0.1.1373 installed (says it's up to date)
Desk is a Phonic MM1805X (bought so that I could use the on-board effects for live performances as well)
Mics are an AKG C900 condensor mic or when I can cut ambient sound levels down, I use an Audio Technica AT4033A wide diaphragm mic.
Phantom power's supplied via the desk, and I'm plugging it into my sound card via the 'flexijack' - which at present is doing some strange things. I did have sound coming through the system, but when I opened the smart recorder it stopped dead, and no amount of fiddling with levels either via the sound card controls or via the PC's on board audio settings makes a difference. I've inspected the leads, ensured the mic's working properly via plugging headphones into the desk, and tried multiple output options from the desk as well - so I'm thinking I either need a soundcard with better drivers (I've heard Creative's are not really for sound recording), or a new desk...
So, given the age of the techology, any advice on my next step would be appreciated.
I'm primarily a singer, and used to write music on a Roland E500 keyboard, bringing it on board via an Aux input (not as a midi file) and mix it in Cool Edit Pro, which I'm still using.
Now I'm pretty sure there must be better ways of doing this!
Cheers in advance for any advice you can offer.
