What to do when good drum tracks go bad?

I have a similar conundrum to several I've seen in this forum. I use a drum machine (Roland R5) in series with my keyboard (Alesis QS6) and encounter the following problem: The keyboard tracks are fine, but when I record drum tracks off the R5, they play back through the synth (on good ol' channel 10) but lose much of the original sound in the process. How do I get the original "machine" drums and not the "keyboard" drums on the playback?

I want to get a new Boss Dr. Groove , but am reluctant to shell out the 3 bills plus until I solve this problem.
Any suggestions? SFTSQ (sorry for the...)

Are you using a computer sequencer?
What channels are the Alesis and the Roland set to respond to?
How are the MIDI jacks connected?

Please give more detail, and I'll try to help you.
