Monitors, mixer, mic, soundcard looking for best sound quality possible what would you buy with $1200 to $1500

To prequalify things a bit . . . what kind of music are you doing? And will you be recording yourself, an entire band? Track-at-a-time or all at once? How big of an ensemble? What kind of space will you record in? What instruments will you use? And how much experience do you have? Are you comfortable with using computers, or do you prefer working with faders and the like?

What kind of recording? Just you? Whole band? How many inputs would you need? You could get by fairly inexpensively with a pci card from M audio like the delta series and a nice board from Soundcraft or Allen+Heath. Mics is a whole other world. That's why there is a whole forum for it. I don't know what you are recording but blindly i would say an SM57, Oktava mc012 with a Studio Projects C1 or C3 would cover a big range of stuff.

Take some time to figure out your needs and post back with what you are looking to accomplish. There is no one answer as much as people would like there to be a package deal.
But honestly i think your money is better spent just buying me things.

Equipment used Yamaha Motif, Akai MPC 2000xl, EMU Proteus 2000

Music recorded is Rap and R&B

Recording booth size 8x6x3

Recorded on Athlon XP2000+ using Nuendo mastering in Wavelab 4.0

Experience making tracks off and on for 3 yrs, but using drum machines and tape decks only, looking to move to software because I am comfortable using computers

I'm assuming you're going one track-at-a-time, so I'd look at an audiophile from m-audio as a sound card.

I'd also get n-tracks from www.fasoft.com for multitrack recording. Does wavelab have multitrack recording? If so, then disregard the n-tracks suggestion. :)

For mics, I would get an sm 57 and/or a decent condenser - maybe a marshall v67 or a Studio Projects C1. Get an m-audio preamp to go with it - I like their dmp3 a lot, and the audio buddy is even pretty good.

You might want to think about picking up a POD or a Behringer V-amp if you plan on tracking any guitars.

You'll probably also want some decent plugins . . . at least eq and compression/limiting. I would definitely look at Waves' Native Gold Bundle. If that's a little rich for your blood, then I would consider Sonic Timeworks. Maybe go to their web site www.sonictimeworks.com and pick up their eq and compressor separately. Maybe throw in the Mastering Compressor (very similar to Waves' L1) if you have the cash to spare.

If you're working with electronic drums, then I'd also have a look at ACID - program for piecing together drum loops and other samples.

That should be enough to get you up and running, and give or take a few items, it should fit right in to your price range.

i would get:

1-Aardvark Q10 soundcard $750
1-Marshall mxl67M $99
2-Marshall mxl603's $150
1-Shure sm57-$80
1-AT ATMPRO25-$40
1-N-Track software $64

use the rest for good cables.....

I guess that would be good . . . if you were recording a full band. Looks to me like the dude will be going track-at-a-time using electric drums, hence no need for the kick mic or 10 inputs, I would imagine.

It would give you some options to "grow in to" though, down the line. And Gidge is the master of pinching a nickel untill it shits. :) :)

hmm

How come noone uses cubase or logic audio? I prefer logic audio over anything, and the effects and plugins are the best ive ever used.
