I'm trying to decide what studio monitors to buy but all the half way decent one's I've heard have been way too expensive for me. Does anyone know of some decent and cheap studio monitors? I have an aardavrk 24/96 with 1/4" outputs and I'd like to get some for around $150-200 for a pair.

You might want to check with deepwater about picking up some Wharfedales, although they'll cost you about a hundred bucks more. I have yet to try them (will soon), but several people on the forum swear by them. Check out the Wharfedale thread.

If you can go an extra $100. Go to Guitar Center and listen to the KRK Rokit 5's. For $150 or so each you'll get a nice self powered monitor.

I've looked at those KRK rockit's before do you know if they sound good compared to m-audio bx-5's?

No matter what, you should definately put up at least another $100--I was going to get the wharfedale's myself (diamond pro 8's, I believe), but I had a difficult time buying monitors I hadn't heard myself, even though I never heard a bad thing about them. Working with that budget, though, check out Samson 65a's. They sound damned good for 300 bucks, and they're active, making it all the better. They have a very punchy sound; the low-end tends to roll off below 100 or so as well, but not too much. Any Sam Ash'll have them--other stores may carry them too, but they're one of Sam Ash's house brands, so I have no idea which stores. By the time you've outgrown those, you'll have enough cash for some real near-fields.
