I am getting my son the Presonus Firebox and a SP B1 mic for Christmas. I just thought that I will need a stand for the mic too.

This will be used for vocal recording only, not to record a guitar.

Does it take anything special or can I get any stand from eBay?

Thoughts?

You won't need anything particularly special. You can get a simple stand with no boom, buy a boom to add on - or - you can get the stand and boom all in one. I've got a OnStage stands mic stand with boom that has worked well. I had it when I owned a B1 as used it with the included mount that came with the B1. I've used it with all my other mics since as well. It's the kind with the three legs on the bottom and the clutches get nice and tight (for the height adjustment and boom adjustment).

Might want to look into a pop filter as well if he'll be singing into it. Those can be had pretty cheap on eBay or you could go the homemade route - using and old pair of nylons :D

A boom stand is always a nice addition because it can be used for everything including vox.

Make sure to add some extra weight to the bottom so it doesn't tip over.

$100-- these are awesome, and you can easily resell it if interest is lost... and your kiddo will feel *extra* pro with it.

$170- http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StuBoomW/

but the wheels are only important if you have a big studio and need to reposition it often.

and lastly, http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MicStdBoomLt/ at $40. I think this is what others were recommending. The problem with these is that the inexperienced can easily put their heavy condensor mic on the boom and have the whole thing come crashing down. I pretty much only use these for little pencil condenser overheads and for dynamic mics.

You will have one heck of an impressive present if you can swing the extra sixty bucks for that first one. I just got something similar for my studio, and it honestly made my band's singer really sing with more confidence. I guess it just looks and feels so pro that it's easier to feel like a pro.

Good choices, by the way on the mic and interface.

I keep meaning to get a couple of these, same idea, a couple bucks less. I haven't personally used them, mind you.

Here's a tip for keeping a boom stand from falling over. Go buy a 5 pound olympic steal weight(plate style with the whole in the middle) and slide it down the the pole of the stand. It'll rest where the feet meet the poll and keep your stand from falling over.

I have one of the "big" On Stage stands mentioned above (cheaper at B&H in NYC: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...SMS7650_SM7650_Hex_Base_Microphone_Stand.html)

I actually put 2 10-pound Olympic style weights on it when it's extended out to keep it from tipping if someone bumps it, but I often have a pair of pretty heavy LDC mics on it. The "Olympic" style weights have a bigger hole to fit over the stand. "Standard" weights have a much smaller hole. I cut some pieces of felt to put under the weights to keep them from grunging up the stand.

All that being said, this is probably serious overkill for what the OP needs. I would think any inexpensive stand would probably be OK. An inexpensive one with a boom would be best.

I'm a big fan of Tama boom mic stands. They're hard to find except at MF, but they're a lot heavier than the cheap stands without being too cumbersome.

I was just imagining an inexperienced kid not thinking too hard about the weight of the mic, and toppling it right over into the basement concrete while he's jamming w/his friends. That extra $60 gets you a useful bit of insurance.

But then if it were my kid, I'd probably start with a cheaper setup to see if he were into it in the first place. But then the big stand could go on Craigslist for $70, and you'd be losing $30. Same loss if s/he never used a $30 stand...
