What speaker simulator do you use in your homerecording studios for guitar amps?

Hi there,

working with a full-tube-amp in a residential area is quite impossible without using a good speaker simulator or even a di-box.

So, what kinds of speaker simulators would you advise me to use? Till now, I used the Palmer adig-lb but I'm asking myself if there exist some other maybe more professional devices I could consider to buy.

regards,
pablo

You might want to look into low-wattage tube amps. The Epiphone Valve Junior is only 5 watts. They're still loud (my vj head is about 100dB, cranked, going through a single 12" speaker), but quieter than a stack.

I don't record enough electric guitar to invest in a speaker sim, but I do occasionally use the SIR convolution plugin with speaker impulses for guitar and bass tracks. It's free and sounds pretty good. Other free amp/cab sims include the Voxengo Boogex and Simulanalog Guitar Suite.

Thanks, but I'm not looking for a guitar amp simulator, I'm just looking for a speaker simulator and honestly, I prefer a hardware-version to digital crap.

It's quiet more natural... more realistic. At the moment I'm almost satisfied with my Palmer-device but maybe there are other home-recording-junks who could give me additional advises... who could convince me to buy another one than the adig-lb.

I like the line 6 Toneport for this. Whether you like all its amp sims or not, you can easily bypass them and just use any of its speaker cab models all by themselves (theres about 30 of them). Additionally, mic type/placement options, early reflection levels, and a bit of added compression and/or GEQ are all available which can further refine your sound. Runs USB and imports directly into any recording software to boot.

Yeah I know its digital and may not replace your palmer but could make a great second option thats worth the price for everything else you can do with it too.

Have you thought about getting (or Building) a speaker isolation box. There
are lots of different ideas and designs out there. Just a thought!

I sometimes use the speaker sim built into my digitech RP300A if I'm recording guitar or playing around and can't turn up the amp for family reasons or whatever. Theres about 24 variations from a 1x12 to a 2x12 to a 4x12 with 3 mic locations per 'cab'. I think the 2x12 center-mic and the 4x12 center-mic sound surprisingly good for a sim.

I too have often wished there were a dedicated rackmount speaker/cab simulator. There are lots of products out there with speaker simulators on the line out, but surely some company has built one dedicated to just cab simulation?

Think about the possibilities. For recording scratch guitar or just getting ideas down, you could use the line out on your favorite amp, run it through a cab simulator and at least have something workable...

The closest I have seen is Behringers "DI100-Ultra" Direct Box with Ultra-G cab simulation. I have never used it, but the Ultra G on my V-AMP Pro sounds pretty good but surely there are better ones out there somewhere.

Oh I see. Disregard my last post. You just want a cab sim while using your amps head. I've never seen a stand-alone cab simulator.

I use a Palmer PDI-03 - nice piece of gear - I run a Triaxis through a 2:90 poweramp and max the volume then through the Palmer at what ever volume I want. Also, just got a Rocktron Prophesy II, it has a really great speaker sim built in - actually sounds like going through a real cab for once.

As far as speaker simlulators, palmer is the name to get. I'd never use one, but they're supposed to be the best.

THD Hotplate is ok.....Weber Mass....

Why simulate when you can attenuate?? Use a real speaker....

Agreed.

But there are some remarkable tracks made via DI using the preamp out of your head into a convolution plugin with some nice impulse files.
