I'm looking for a 2x12 or a 1x12 that I can use for band practice with a drummer, bassist, and a horn section, and I need to be loud enough to be heard. The kind of music we are going to be playing is ska/hardcore. My Vox Pathfinder 15R isn't going to cut it without clipping and damaging the speaker.

I don't need faboulous overdrive, I will most likley be switching from clean to overdrive with a BOSS super Overdrive or maybe even their super-uber-death-metal pedal. I'll be using P-90s on a Gibosn or possibly Seymour duncan HumB's on a Epiphone.

What 1 or 2x12 would you tone-a-philes reccomend? My price range is in the range of 250

Thanks for your input

I used to have a Fender Ultimate Chorus that was a pretty good all around amp. The clean was really good. I would think that's something inportant for ska music.

There are some Randall amps that can be found used for not alot of $ too. They're all solid state. Or maybe look at Hughes and Kettner amps, too. They seem to focus on solid state technology. In any case, just do some hunting at used amps to make your money go further. Especially in solod state amps, which don't tend to have the service issues of tube amps.

Roland JC-120 has an awesome clean sound for the ska-ish bite you might want. Unsure how they would perform while plugged into a distortion peal either.

Jazz Chorus in either speaker configuation. No one has been able to approach the clarity, cleanliness and the sustain of these amps. The fact that most decent sized studios have one is a bit of a testament. They are, without a doubt, the best solidstate amp ever built. They work well with any 'good' pedal.

if you like the tone of the Vox Pathfinder, why not use it to drive a 2x12 cabinet?

cheers,
wade

Roland JC120 all the way. Clean all the way to 10.. which is stupidlly loud. Plus they sound great with overdrive/distortion pedals/modellers/emulators. I also run my acoustic into mine.

I've heard good things about these.

And based on my experience with the Line 6 Spider II, I'd look at a 12" version of that.

My son's Siper II 30 watt is a great sounding little amp. The on board effects are not all that great(but fun none the less) but the clean, drive, and metal channels all have GREAT usable tone. The insane channel....well is insane.....but if you back off the drive it makes a great "lead" channel. I use outboard effects with it. It is PLENTY loud.

Would 15 watts be enough to drive a 2x12 cabinet at a gig? If it would be, that'd be awesome, but I don't know.

I'll check out those Line 6 amps, I'm not a fan of modeling amps (too much stuff I don't need for a higher price) but if its got good tone and is reasonably priced, I'm there.

Thanks guys (and gals if there are any out there) for all your help.

The JC is a great amp, I've had great results from that, but honestly, I think the most startling discovery i've made in the past couple years was the Peavey XXL, surprisingly great sounding for the price, and it's a 212.

My personal opinion is that for a 2x12 you should really have at least 30 watts. You need enough power to really be able to get those drivers moving.

Hmm, what about the Fender FM series? I know the distortion is shit, but I'd be using a pedal for that.

Any opinions?

Roland JC's. As clean or as dirty as it's source. It's not an amplifier its a surgical tool.

ive got a marshall avt50 1x12 that isnt that bad, dunno how other people feel about those though, i dont use it anymore, i got a mesa duel recto now!!!!!!!!!!!

Vox AD50VT

It has more than enough power to keep up with a full band and a huge array of tones and effects built in.

Stick with a Vox... it's good stuff. ;)

I'll second those Carvin SX amps that apl pointed out. I have an SX-100 I bought in about 1988 and it's a great amp. Excellent clean sound, loud as all hell, and very good distortion tones for a solid-state amp too.

Look into a Trace Elliot Super Tramp. You can get it in a head or a 1x12 or 2x12 config. Stellar cleans and awesome overdrive for solid state. Used it on one of the songs on my band's EP. I love that amp I just dont have any money to get one. They record really well and are really quite loud too. You can pick one up on ebay for about 300 in a 2x12.

I think its more of a preference than what other people tell you is "good".
For instance, someone can tell you to get a Marshall. So you go and play it at your local music store, but you dont like the way it sounds. But, you play a Crate and you love the sound it gives you. It makes it more of what you like instead of what other people think sounds good.

<< Would 15 watts be enough to drive a 2x12 cabinet at a gig? >>

i sure would think so. i drive a 1x12 cabinet with my Pathfinder 15R and it's VERY loud. not to mention, i think that 15W that they rate those Pathfinders at is a *loud* 15W to begin with.

but by all means, if you want a new amp, get one. but if you're happy with the sound you get out of that pathfinder, i'd be looking for ways to keep it in the chain.

cheers,
wade

Hey, thanks again for all the posts, I think I might just purchase a 1x12 that will be driven by my Pathfinder. I really like the sound of it, and if shit hits the fan and I can' get a 1x12, I'll just mic it at gigs.
