As the subject heading asks, what kind of software do you need on your computer for the purpose, obviously, of incorporating one into the recording experience, and what sort of memory are we looking at. This will be my first real foray into building a home studio, after a hiatus from really even playing for quite a while, and the now commonplace aspect of utilizing computers has kind of snuck up on me!!

very powerful and cheap....lots of people here use it, with a forum dedicated to it.....

Id start with at least 128mb ram, just because it is so cheap....

start from there before you buy anything else...get a feel for what you need before youplunk out to much $$$.....

How much to spend...

I was thinking that I could, hopefully, spend no more than $5000.

$5000 for the entire setup (shouldv'e been more specific)

It seems that the software will be among the cheapest elements of home recording. Are there any particular programs that are a staple of any home recording setup?

N-Tracks, ok....

Just checked out the recommended site, thanks :)

Thanks!

I definately appriciate the guidance....it can be a little overwhelming!

Get the Digi 001 with ProTools LE 5.0.1. software. It's about $800, and comes with a soundcard, midi interface, Mac/Pc comptatible, 8 ins/outs, 2 digitals outs, phone out, and 2 mic preamps... You need 256 mg of RAM... A good Dell should run you about $1,200.
