what are some good softwares for strings out there?...

Garritan Personal Orchestra: http://www.garritan.com/GPO-features.html

I have this and have enjoyed using it. Probably haven't dug in and used it to its full potential, but everything you'd need string wise is there. Allows some nice layering and arranging.

I have a tendency to fire up my Roland XV3080 (with the Orchestra expansion cards I have in it) when I'm looking to create orchestrations. Probably due to the fact that when I want to lay something down quicker, this works better for me.

Anyway, I could easily recommend GPO for a software orchestra.

The audio samples for the Miroslav Philharmonik package from IK Multimedia sound pretty good, but I haven't had any hands-on experience with it.

Vienna Symphonic Library is a a good bet. They have a nice package structure that means you can pick and choose which sections you want to buy.

...and plan on additional $$ for the dongle required to use it.

IMO, it should be included. It all adds up if you're on a budget and doing home studio stuff. Not a biggie...I'm not just a fan of dongled software. The demos do sound good though! Do you use this?

Yeah, I do agree it would be nice to have it included, but the nature of the software means if they were to release a usb dongle with every variation of the library, they would be giving away too many and users would end up with 8 :D

I use parts of vienna symphonic library. I have a native instruments sampler that includes all the string sections, woodwind, brass and some percussion, as well as 2 fantastic grand pianos. I havn't used the solo stuff, but based upon the section samples, it will be good.

Edirol

Edirol HQ Orchestral is a good VST for strings and other classics instruments !

I myself am a fan of Garriton Personal Orchestra. My parents brought it for me several years back right after it came out for Christmas and had a missing number on the Serial and so we called up the company and Mr. Garriton himself assisted us and it has been a joy ever since working with it. Thats what I call customer service!
