I don't think anyone has suggested not paying for Reaper
Semantics perhaps but his post read "Cheap enough if I decide to buy it" which does suggest just that, it should read "Cheap enough if I decide to use it". I just don't like this idea people get in their heads that Reaper is free software (admittedly I made the same error in statement when recommending it to others myself) Obviously it's the risk Cockos takes as a company but their business model will hopefully be proven to be successful and more companies will follow suit. It's very hard to figure out how a crippled piece of software will really fit in your workflow.
