hey guys,
I'm wanting to put some mp3's up, but I was wondering what size to make the hifi and the lofi's (like, 128 kbps, or 96, or whatever). I haven't found much help on the subject.
Thanks

I do all mine at 128.. I use a program called "CDex" I believe you can get it at www.download.com I never have any problems with output.. no weird track length errors and no pops etc.. I havent' made any Lo-fi copies though and I'm not sure if CDex will do different bitrates.. sorry.. but that's what I DO use for My Mp3 encoding..
Cheers!

That link should take you to the coolest encoder around, I think. (2nd one on that page) "Participant" turned me on to it...It uses that "Lame" encoder, which is great... But the coolest thing is that you can just right click on a .wav file, and this program is sitting right there with a big old "convert to mp3" option.

I've been encoding @ 128 lately... I'm sure 160 is better...when you go above that, it's hard for the files to stream from the net properly for most of us.

Good luck,
Chris

thanks for the link Chris, I'm sure we could all stand to try another encoder.. alot of the mp3's I've heard lately have been FULL of pops etc.

No problem. I should probably thank Participant...(but he's such a jerk... :D).

128 would be a definite minimum.......Ive been doing 192 lately.......

Gidge, do you mix it down to wave at 24bit or 16bit mixdowns? What difference do you hear between the two kbps rates afterwards?

I dunno Gidge, I thought 128 was supposed to be pretty high resolution? I know when I download music to listen to, I always download the lo-fi version (because of my s-l-o-w connection). Even then, sometimes I can stream a whole song, other times I can't, it just takes too long. So is 128 a minimum even for making a lo-fi mp3?

Also, I use the encoder in my Goldwave editing program. This has worked fine for me. I also have Nero 5.5 (I think that has an mp3 encoder, I'm not sure). What adavantage is there to downloading a new encoder?

Hey guys,
I just looked, and my Goldwave uses "LAME" for encoding to mp3. This is good, no? Just as good as the other encoders you guys mentioned?

I checked and CDex uses the LAME encoder as well but you can chose others if you have them... I just love the normalize features in these encoders..
Does anyone have any comments about using a normalizer when encoding to Mp3?

Funny, I just edited my last post in regards to the "size" question. Psychic I??? NW radio site owner suggested to me 128 for all submissions due to the limitations on his site. Little late. LOL ~~~Lee

Yes, yes, yes to DBP. Recommended to me by a very learned mastering engineer. He also mentioned WINAMP. Very pleased with both, I am! ~~~Lee
