I suffer Narcoleptic Rage
Ive been working thru a Radio Shack SSM-60 DJ mixer so far. Ive outgrown its simplicity but Im not sure what to buy. I dont need more then a couple inputs cus I record everything direct and its just me.

So it comes down to needing to upgrade preamps (the RS ones gotta suck) without losing my outboard mixing/monitoring ability.

My only mic, my trusty SM57 has only been used for vocs but Id like to get into some cab mic'ing soon.

So do I keep using my RS mixer and buy an outboard preamp or pick up a Behringer UB502 and "upgrade" all in one? (having read ALOT of what has been said about them, the UB preamps are spose to be improved from the MX series and they GOTTA be better then RS preamps hehe)

Anyways...appreciate any opinions or ideas on the matter :D

Unless you're desperate for more channels, I'd get a decent mic preamp that you won't outgrow quickly. If you go with the Beh small mixer, you'll outgrow it eventually -upgraded pre's or not. A good pre will stay with you even if you get a quality mixer down the road.

I agree totally and thats how I was looking at it. I guess my main concern w goin w the preamp is the setup. Would I use the pre for input (as my mixer is now) and use the RS mixer as a monitor/tracking mixer on the output? I really only need a couple channels in.

hope Im makin sense cus I confoosed m'self hehe

There are a couple of different ways you could go. If it was me, I'd make sure I got a pre with more than 1 out (many of them do). Send one to the mixer for monitoring, and send the other directly to the recorder (or PC). That way you can still mix/monitor the way you want, but you keep the RS BS out of the signal chain.
