i kinda havnt upgraded anything in forever..and its time. but i dont know where i could get the most bang for my buck...

right now at my little home studio www.myspace.com/echoroomproductions
the recording chain usually goes.. drum mics plugged with mogami and monster cables through a crappy snake through a wall into a presonus digimax (blah) then sent to my motu828 via adat. then trigger channels (i record the splats to either open gates or sound replace) go into a nady 8pre(ughhhh) but it doesnt really matter since id be soundreplacing the splats 100% then for my vocal/guitar room going into 2 free inputs on my motu i have a FMR RNP RNC combo...which i dont really like, it just kinda sounds....blah, not bad just nothing special, even my old GTbrick had more "something". the rnp connects to the room via 2 daiseychaned mic cables. all monitored through krk rp8s. i think for what i have i get fairly good sounds. my mic locker only consists of a few 57s, an i5, audix d6, akg d112, shure sm7b, two octava SNCs for everheads, a pair of C1000s, and a shitty groove tubes gt55.

where would YOU improve?

I'd get the best LDC my budget would allow, hopefully multi pattern... maybe an AKG C414; if that's too expensive then maybe a RODE NT2-A.

Unless there's a piece of gear you feel that you just gotta' have ... then I would look elsewhere for upgrades.

703 insulation ... bass traps ... better "recording" gear, and by recording gear, I mean better amps, instruments, maybe a nice Fender Jazz or Precision bass, etc.

But really, since most samling sounds like junk in the end anyway, I wouldn't even bother until I got in to recording real drums. :D But that's just me.

How much you got to spend? if you say something like "a couple hundred bucks", then I'd say save your money and don't buy anything. The only way you're going to get any worthwhile improvement is to spend several times that.

If the latter's the case, I'd get some decent mics and one or two channels of matching quality preamp. As far as mics, the biggest bang for the buck IMHO would be a AEA R84 ribbon, a Sennheiser 441 LDD, and either an EV RE20 or Shure SM7 LDD. The more I mess around with the latest versions of this stuff, the more I gravitate *away* from many of today's LDCs unless they are near the top shelf. Again, bang for the buck, Mojave Audio makes a nice one (MA-20, if I remember correctly?) I'd like to have in my permanent locker, and for an SDC I'd like the Earthworks' 30 series (I'd REALLY like a twin pair of them ;) )

I'd then recommend one or two channels of "gold channel" preamp/converter. to get your key tracking through. But we'll talk about those only after you figure your budget ;).

thanks alot for the replies guys, i didnt realize i cross posted in another forum too...oops. right now really concerned about my monitoring chain..which includes acoustics. i have 6 rockwool basstraps mounted 4 inches off my rear wall, 2 behind my monitors. nothing on the ceiling unfortunatly yet. also im monitoring thru rp8s.... after i improve that im looking to spend probably a good 3-5k on pres or whatever. so my budget is somewhat higher then most :)
