hi, i just stumbled upon this board but it seems to be pretty helpful, so heres what i would like to know...
im getting a new computer built, 2X256MB PC3200 DDR 400mhz, 80 GB, and was wondering which soundcard would be best to add to it... it will be used just for vocals and turntables since we are a hip hop group thats the only instruments we will be using... i'm not just starting out with this, my friend has a setup that we've been using and i just want to get one also, so its not like im completely new to this, so would like something fairly decent, and im not looking for protools, ive heard good things about m-audio products though. So if anyone could narrow it down to a few choices for me to look into closer that would be great. Also, any useful information about each soundcard would be great.

thanks

Hi,

M-Audio makes great cards, and for just a little more than the Delta 66, you can get the OmniStudio. This may have more I/O than you need, but what it does have are two fine 1/4" or XLR compatible mic preamps for vocals. Just a thought.

would you consider it more useful to get the OmniStudio rather than to get the Audiophile 24/96 along with a mixer..? because i'd need to purchase a seperate mixer with the Audiophile, correct?

Hi,

The omni won't replace your mixer. What I was suggesting is that with the Omni you'll have good vocal input that you can mix with a soft-sequencer on the computer. You can also get any number of hard mixers and dedicated preamps, but this would be a more expensive solution.

But these are just thoughts. Your project sounds like it has very different requirements than mine, but with the omni box you also get connectors for the turntables, so if you mix virtually, you should have everything you need in a simple package. Just plug in the mics, plug in the turntable, get a cheap sequencing software for your studio, and your set. And you'll get very good sound.

Perhaps others who work more as you do (with the turntable) would have better ideas. This is just one way I believe would work. There's so much out there, keep looking, and good luck.
